AOC Says Democrats Will Launch ‘Aggressive Investigation’ Into Trump

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making clear what Democrats plan to do if they win back control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections: launch aggressive investigations into President Donald Trump and his administration.

During a Friday appearance on MS NOW’s The Briefing with former Biden White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, Ocasio-Cortez said Democrats would pursue what she called an “aggressive investigation” into Trump, his Cabinet, donors, and allies if they regain subpoena power.

The New York Democrat argued that congressional investigations and the Democratic legislative agenda could move forward at the same time.

Psaki introduced the topic by referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who has warned voters that a Democratic House majority would use its power to investigate Trump and those around him.

“I played a clip of little Mike Johnson, as I like to call him, laying out how a Democratic majority in Congress would investigate the president, the cabinet, donors and friends,” Psaki said.

“It all sounds, I think, probably to a lot of people watching and a lot of people out there who were infuriated by the level of corruption. Pretty good.”

“But you’ve also talked about a lot of things you deeply care about: health care and affordable housing. I know there are many other things.”

“What do you see as the right priorities? Balance of things, especially as it relates to investigations and accountability? Where does that fall on how much time should be spent on that?”

Ocasio-Cortez pointed to her previous work on the House Oversight Committee during Trump’s first administration, presenting that experience as a model for what Democrats could do again.

“I mean, I of course, some I spent many years on the oversight, and on the oversight committee in Congress, which is in charge of investigations during the first Trump administration,” she said.

“I helped on the investigation of Michael Cohen at the time, which led to a record setting settlement from, Attorney General Letitia James.”

The congresswoman said Democrats would not have to choose between investigations and legislation.

“But, I think that it really is — it genuinely is a situation of we can walk and chew gum at the same time,” she said.

“There are certain committees that I think will be spearheading real investigations into this administration.”

Ocasio-Cortez argued that oversight is necessary to prevent what she described as corruption from becoming normalized in government.

“There has to be accountability, and it has to be because we cannot allow this level of corruption to consume our public service and our government ever again,” she said.

“And the only way that you allow that are the only way that you set that precedent is by aggressive investigation and consequence.”

She also said congressional investigations can lead to additional legal action outside Capitol Hill.

“And often times, some of the things that do come out in congressional investigations sometimes yield to, either state pursuits, etc..”

Ocasio-Cortez dismissed Johnson’s warning that Democrats would use investigations as a partisan weapon.

“And, you know, Mike Johnson paints this as though it’s some partizan witch hunt but if you don’t want to be prosecuted for crimes, don’t do crimes.”

For Republicans, the remarks sounded less like oversight and more like a preview of another round of political warfare.

Democrats spent years investigating Trump during his first term and after he left office, while conservatives have repeatedly accused the party of using congressional power, prosecutors, and friendly state officials to target their chief political opponent.

Democrats, meanwhile, argue that congressional oversight is a core constitutional responsibility and say future investigations would be aimed at accountability inside the executive branch.

The stakes are clear.

Control of the House will be one of the central battles of the 2026 midterms. If Democrats retake the majority, committee gavels would shift back to their party, giving them subpoena power and broad authority to investigate Trump administration officials, agencies, donors, and allies.

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments offer one of the clearest signals yet that Democrats are preparing to make investigations of Trump a major priority if voters return them to power.

For conservatives, the warning from Johnson now appears confirmed by AOC herself.

Democrats may campaign on housing, health care, and affordability.

But if they win the House, Trump investigations would almost certainly be back at the center of Washington.
