Border Patrol Agents Ambushed in Texas by Rifle-Wielding Gunman Dressed in Tactical Gear

A violent ambush targeting federal agents unfolded Monday morning in McAllen, Texas, when a man clad in tactical gear and armed with a rifle opened fire on U.S. Border Patrol agents outside a federal facility.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the attack in a post on X, writing:

“This morning an individual opened fire at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas.
Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter. Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured, including one shot in the knee. All three have gone to the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation led by the @FBI.”

Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin shared graphic details from the scene:

“Local police and federal agents returned fire, killing him. I’m told this was a purposeful ambush/attack against federal agents.”

McAllen, located near the southernmost tip of Texas, became a flashpoint during the Biden-era border crisis, where illegal crossings surged out of control. The shooter struck near the McAllen International Airport, where a Border Patrol annex facility sits directly across the street.

According to the Associated Press, law enforcement recovered a second rifle and additional ammunition from the scene. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez stated the attacker’s motive remains under investigation.

This attack follows another shooting just days earlier, when a Texas police officer was wounded near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

In response, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche issued a stern warning on X:

“We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the USAOs and our law enforcement partners.
The Department has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible.”

The escalation in violence comes as Customs and Border Protection revealed record-breaking success under the Trump administration’s renewed enforcement measures. Just last week, CBP reported the lowest monthly border encounter numbers in U.S. history—25,243 total encounters and only 6,070 apprehensions. Notably, "gotaways"—illegal immigrants who evade capture—have plummeted by 90 percent compared to last year.

CBP stated simply:

“When we enforce the law, the numbers speak for themselves.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised the results under President Trump’s leadership:

“The numbers don’t lie—under President Trump’s leadership, DHS and CBP have shattered records and delivered the most secure border in American history. The world is hearing our message: the border is closed to law breakers.”

“Under President Trump, our Border Patrol agents are empowered to do their job once again, secure our border and protect the American people.”
