Breaking: Gavin Newsom and His Wife Are Reportedly Under DOJ Investigation
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is attempting to cast himself as the target of political retaliation after announcing Monday that he and his wife are under investigation by the Department of Justice.
“Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list. He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us. They have not found a crime — they are simply trying to find one,” Newsom wrote in a post on X.
“He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President,” Newsom said.
The Democratic governor then escalated his attack on President Donald Trump, calling him “simply the most corrupt President in American history.”
“We have nothing to hide. Mr. President, come after me. I am not going anywhere. The country is watching,” Newsom wrote.
But according to a Monday report from The New York Times, the investigation appears to center heavily on Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and her nonprofit activity.
The report, citing an unnamed source, said former employees connected to Siebel Newsom’s nonprofits and Newsom’s office have already been questioned by investigators.
The same source also pushed back on Newsom’s claim that the probe was politically driven. The Times reported that its source “disputed Mr. Newsom’s assertion that the investigations were politically motivated, and said they had been initiated by federal law enforcement officials in California, not launched by officials in Washington.”

Fox News reported that the investigation began in 2025 and that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento was responding to whistleblower complaints involving the personal finances of the governor and his wife.
The New York Post reported that one allegation involves money that allegedly flowed to one of Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s nonprofits from “special interests doing business with Newsom and the state.”
NEW: @realDailyWire has learned that there are multiple DOJ investigations going on related to Gavin Newsom, though none of them are directly into Newsom himself. One investigation, which began in 2025, is related to his wife and her taxes, a source familiar shared. A separate…

The Post also suggested the investigation may overlap with the case of Dana Williamson, Newsom’s former chief of staff, who pleaded guilty last month to illegally assisting a former client who was being sued by the state.
Newsom, who is term-limited as California governor, has increasingly positioned himself as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender. RealClearPolling currently estimates his support at 17.4 percent, leaving him roughly 10 points behind former Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Department of Justice declined to comment to multiple outlets.
For conservatives, the case raises familiar questions about California’s political machine, nonprofit influence, and whether powerful Democratic figures have benefited from a web of special interests while presenting themselves as defenders of clean government.
Newsom’s public response suggests he is preparing to frame any scrutiny as partisan persecution. But the reports pointing to whistleblower complaints, nonprofit funding questions, and federal law enforcement activity in California complicate that narrative — especially for a governor who has spent years attacking Republicans over ethics, transparency, and accountability.
