Breaking: Iran Announces the Strait of Hormuz Is 'Completely Open for the Remaining Period of the Ceasefire'

Iran moved Friday to signal a temporary easing of tensions in one of the world’s most volatile regions, announcing that the vital Strait of Hormuz will remain open to commercial shipping for the duration of the current ceasefire.

The declaration came from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in a post on X, where he outlined Tehran’s position following recent hostilities in the region.

“In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open,” Araghchi wrote.

He added that ships would proceed “on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.”

The announcement follows a weeklong pause in U.S. strikes targeting Iranian assets, part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to reassert deterrence and stability in the Middle East. It also comes as the United States maintains a strong naval posture in the region, including a blockade of vessels navigating the critical trade corridor.

The development was quickly reported by Bloomberg, highlighting the immediate economic and geopolitical implications of the move.

President Donald J. Trump responded on Truth Social, welcoming the reopening of the key maritime route.

“IRAN HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE. THANK YOU!” Trump wrote.

Long considered a linchpin of global energy markets, the Strait of Hormuz handles a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments. Any disruption to traffic through the narrow passage has historically triggered global economic ripple effects, including rising energy prices and supply chain instability.

Iran had previously threatened to impose tolls on vessels transiting the strait—despite lacking any recognized legal authority over the international waterway—raising concerns about violations of international law and freedom of navigation.

Meanwhile, diplomatic talks between Tehran and Washington remain ongoing. President Trump has made clear that any lasting agreement must include Iran’s full abandonment of its nuclear program, reinforcing his administration’s longstanding “peace through strength” doctrine.

The announcement comes approximately six weeks after the launch of Operation Epic Fury, a coordinated military campaign involving the Pentagon and Israeli forces. The operation has focused on dismantling key elements of Iran’s military capabilities and leadership infrastructure.
