'Broke Character': Viewers Catch 'Telling' Moment From Obama as He Embarrasses Himself
Apparently, it’s not election disinformation if Barack Obama says it.
During the keynote address at the Obama Foundation’s 2024 Democracy Forum on Thursday, the 44th president made comments that, coming from a Republican, would undoubtedly be labeled as “wild assertions,” “irresponsible disinformation,” or “false claims of fraud.”
After all, those are the rules his party has consistently upheld.
But Obama said them. And with Donald Trump set to become the next president, it seems those rules are conveniently out the window.
“Pluralism depends on everyone following a certain set of rules,” Obama stated during his speech. “What happens when the other side has repeatedly and abundantly made clear they are not interested in playing by the rules?”
Care to elaborate, Mr. President?
“There are going to be times potentially when one side tries to stack the deck and lock in [pause] a permanent grip on power,” Obama continued, seemingly catching himself mid-sentence before proceeding into contentious territory.
He pushed forward anyway.
“Either by actively suppressing votes, or politicizing the Armed Forces, or using the judiciary, criminal justice system to go after opponents,” he claimed.
“And pluralism does not call for us to just stand back and say, ‘well, I’m not sure that’s OK,’” he added. “In those circumstances, a line has been crossed, and we have to stand firm and speak out and organize.”
For clarity, here’s the clip in fuller context, confirming that no crucial details were omitted:
So, what we’re hearing is that the opposition is working to secure a “permanent grip on power” by not “playing by the rules.”
How? By “actively suppressing votes,” which is often a euphemism for enacting voter ID laws or restricting ballot harvesting — measures Democrats have previously dismissed as unnecessary since, they claim, voter fraud doesn’t exist. Interestingly, voting in states like Georgia has been notably accessible, despite Democrats’ earlier claims that it was “the new Jim Crow.”
“Politicizing the Armed Forces?” Like when the military adopts progressive “woke” policies? That seems to be the Democrats’ playbook.
“Using the judiciary, criminal justice system to go after opponents?” If you’re unsure why that’s ironic, consider revisiting news from early 2023, when Alvin Bragg brought dubious “hush money” charges against the now-president-elect Donald Trump.
Even social media users appeared incredulous:
Former “Hercules” actor Kevin Sorbo commented that Obama “[a]lmost broke character for a sec.”
Conservative journalist Collin Rugg replied to Sorbo, noting the “pause was telling.”
Had Trump or any other Republican made such claims before the election, they likely would have faced social media censorship for spreading so-called “disinformation.”
But now, disinformation is apparently back in style! With Democrats out of power, it seems fair game to allege voter suppression, political retribution, Russian interference, and more. Once power is regained, however, such claims will likely return to being “verifiably false” and subject to censorship by fact-checking organizations.
And that pause? Even Barack Obama seemed to struggle to deliver these remarks without a moment of self-awareness. Unfortunately, it was fleeting.
