Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Mulls Dramatic Exit as Crisis Spirals 'Out of Control': Report

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing intense pressure to step down following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on Monday.

“We are calling for Justin Trudeau’s resignation,” said Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party, as reported by CTV.

CTV's coverage indicated that stepping down is one of the serious options Trudeau is considering.

Anthony Housefather, a Liberal Party member of Parliament, also expressed that Trudeau should step aside.

“We have a choice right now. We either make the change, or we don’t,” Housefather stated.

“I believe the prime minister has passed that shelf life,” he added. “We need to have a different leader with a different vision if we are to be viable in the next election.”

Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre weighed in, declaring, “Everything has gotten out of control.”

Dominic LeBlanc was appointed to replace Freeland as finance minister.

Freeland’s departure came amid troubling economic news. The Department of Finance reported a projected deficit of $61.9 billion for 2023-24, significantly higher than Freeland’s previous $40.1-billion target.

In her resignation letter, Freeland accused Trudeau of prioritizing “costly political gimmicks” over tackling critical challenges, such as the potential tariffs President-elect Donald Trump has threatened, according to The New York Times.

Trudeau had reportedly been pushing for policies like a sales tax holiday and direct cash payouts to taxpayers.

Canadians, Freeland wrote, “know when we are working for them, and they equally know when we are focused on ourselves.”

Adding to Trudeau’s woes, Sean Fraser, the housing minister, also announced his resignation on Monday.

Pierre Poilievre criticized the government’s instability at a time when the country needs strong leadership, as reported by Newsmax.

“Justin Trudeau has lost control, but he’s hanging onto power,” Poilievre said.

“All this chaos, all this division, all this weakness is happening as our largest neighbor and closest ally is imposing 25 percent tariffs under a recently elected Trump with a strong mandate, a man who knows how to identify weakness.”
