Democrat Candidate Arrested After Cops Find Cocaine
A Democratic candidate for the Indiana State Senate is facing criminal charges after a weekend arrest that has raised serious questions about judgment and fitness for office.
According to local reports, Andrew Dezelan was taken into custody Sunday evening in Fishers, Indiana, and charged with cocaine possession and resisting law enforcement after allegedly canvassing a neighborhood while under the influence.
A probable cause affidavit filed in Hamilton County states that police responded around 8 p.m. to a resident’s complaint about a man going door-to-door. When an officer approached Dezelan’s vehicle, he reportedly attempted to explain that he had permission from a homeowners association to canvass in the area.
However, officers quickly became suspicious. Authorities said Dezelan was speaking rapidly, sweating heavily, and displaying pinpoint pupils—common indicators of narcotics use. When asked to step out of the vehicle, he allegedly put the car in reverse before eventually complying.
Police then removed him from the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs after a brief struggle. A subsequent search reportedly uncovered a small plastic bag containing a substance that field-tested positive for cocaine.
Dezelan, 38, previously served for more than a decade as policy director for the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus. According to his campaign materials, he launched his bid for office to address issues facing small business owners and retirees navigating Medicare.
His arrest comes amid a competitive race for Indiana’s 31st Senate District, where both parties have fielded multiple candidates ahead of the primary.
The incident also lands at a time when Democrats—particularly those aligned with the party’s progressive wing—have faced mounting setbacks at the ballot box. In recent primary contests, several candidates backed by prominent left-wing figures failed to gain traction with voters, signaling ongoing divisions within the party.
One notable example came in Illinois, where progressive candidates supported by national figures such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren suffered a string of defeats. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee celebrated the outcome, posting: “Being endorsed by @BernieSanders, @RoKhanna, @justicedems and @sunrisemvmt was a kiss of death in Illinois. Democratic voters rejected their extreme anti-Israel candidates, instead choosing mainstream candidates. AIPAC is proud to help defeat six would-be Squad members tonight!”
Among the most high-profile losses was activist Kat Abughazaleh, who fell short against Daniel Biss in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District. Despite backing from progressive lawmakers including Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, her campaign failed to gain enough support.
Meanwhile, on the Republican side, early indicators suggest party voters are already coalescing around JD Vance as a leading contender for the 2028 presidential race—highlighting a growing contrast in party unity heading into future election cycles.

As for Dezelan, the legal process is just beginning, but the political fallout could be swift. In a race where credibility and voter trust are paramount, the allegations surrounding his arrest are likely to become a central issue in the weeks ahead.
