Democrat Mayor Eric Adams Hints That He Could Join Republican Party

Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams has caused a stir in political circles by suggesting he might consider rejoining the Republican Party at some point in the future.

Adams, who ran for office as a tough-on-crime candidate with a background as an NYPD captain, previously belonged to the Republican Party from 1997 to 2001 before becoming a Democrat.

As mayor, his stance on illegal immigration has frequently clashed with the positions of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

During an interview on “Mornings On 1,” celebrating his City Council’s approval of the “City of Yes” housing initiative, Adams was asked if he would consider switching back to his former party.

“The party that’s the most important for me is the American party. I’m a part of the American party. I love this country. This is the home of the free, the land of the brave,” Adams said. “My 19-year-old [uncle] died on the fields of Vietnam protecting what this city and this country represents. And that’s the party I’m going to always be a member of.”

He added, “And I did it as a police officer when I wore that bulletproof vest for 22 years. And I’m gonna do it with this blue suit as the mayor of the city of New York.”

In a separate interview with WPIX, Adams confirmed he intends to seek reelection as a Democrat but left open the possibility of returning to the Republican Party in the future.

In November, Adams appeared on another program where he resisted efforts by the hosts to criticize the president-elect directly, instead urging unity.

“Let’s love the country. Let’s love our cities,” he stated. “Let’s get away from the rhetoric of the professionalism that we know. Those are experts in this. They’re going to look at his proposal, do a real analysis, and make these decisions. It happens every day. We’ve reached a point in this country where we no longer want to engage in conversation. They were even calling him Hitler. That was an insult to the millions of Jews and others who died. We know what Hitler did,” he continued.

“When I’m on the streets talking to my young people who [are] wearing Hamas signs and calling for the destruction of groups, I said we have to bring down this rhetoric,” Adams added.

In October, ahead of the presidential election, Adams defended former President Donald Trump, criticizing Democrats for comparing Trump to Adolf Hitler and calling him a “fascist.”

“I have had those comments hurled at me by some political leaders in the city; my answer is ‘No,’” Adams said when asked about those criticisms of Trump, as reported by the New York Post.

“I know what Hitler has done, and I know what a fascist regime looks like. I think, as I have called for over and over again, that the level of conversation, I think we can all dial down the temperature,” said Adams, who identifies as a moderate Democrat and is currently facing federal corruption allegations.

Adams made these comments during a news conference in Manhattan, where he also announced plans for a “large police presence” at an upcoming Trump rally at Madison Square Garden.

Recently, Adams disclosed plans to meet with Tom Homan, the president-elect’s choice for border czar, to discuss how New York City could play a role in deportation efforts. Speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” he explained, “I want to hear the actual plan, how we are going to actually operationalize this. We’re not talking about those who are stealing apples. We are talking about those who are shooting at police officers, raping individuals, and I would like to hear the border czar’s plan on addressing that.”
