Democratic Lawmaker Arrested on Multiple Child Sex Charges

A Democratic state representative in North Carolina has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies involving a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old, in a scandal shaking Raleigh’s political establishment.

According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Rep. Cecil Brockman, 41, faces two counts of indecent liberties with a child and two counts of statutory rape of a minor between the ages of 13 and 15, as reported by NC Newsline.

Brockman is currently being held without bond at the High Point Detention Center. Despite being an elected official with access to resources, he claimed to be indigent in order to obtain a court-appointed public defender.

Court records show the magistrate who denied Brockman’s bond cited concerns over flight risk, writing that the Democrat lawmaker “has access to abundant resources to aid in his flight from prosecution.” The magistrate also noted that Brockman “has made attempts to contact the victim … and has gone as far as attempting to locate the juvenile in the hospital and attempting to use his status to gain information on the whereabouts of the victim,” according to WBTV-TV.

Brockman was set to appear in court Thursday, but the hearing was delayed due to what local outlets described as a medical emergency, per WGHP-TV.

Warrants allege that in August, Brockman “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did commit and attempt to commit lewd and lascivious act” with a 15-year-old victim.

Members of both parties have called for his resignation as public outrage mounts.

House Democratic Leader Robert Reives said, “It has become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives. Rep. Brockman must resign immediately.”

Democratic Governor Josh Stein echoed that sentiment, stating, “These charges are extremely serious and deeply troubling. While the legal process has yet to play out, it’s clear he cannot effectively serve his constituents and should resign immediately.”

Republican House Speaker Destin Hall also called on Brockman to step down, labeling the allegations “shocking and extremely serious.”

“Given the evidence that’s publicly known, he should resign immediately so these charges do not distract from the work of the North Carolina House,” Hall said.

As of now, Brockman remains behind bars as the investigation continues — and the Democratic Party faces another public credibility crisis amid a growing wave of scandals involving its elected officials nationwide.
