Disgraced Democrat Eric Swalwell Resigns From Congress Amid Explosive Sexual Assault Allegations

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a stunning fall from grace for one of the most vocal antagonists of the America First movement, Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) announced his resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday. The move follows a disastrous 48 hours for the California Democrat, whose once-promising gubernatorial ambitions imploded under the weight of multiple allegations of sexual assault and predatory misconduct.

The resignation marks the end of a tumultuous political career for Swalwell, who served as an impeachment manager during the first term of President Donald J. Trump. While Swalwell spent years baselessly questioning the integrity of the Executive Branch, he now faces a reckoning over his own personal conduct.

A Campaign in Freefall

The dominoes began to fall Sunday night when Swalwell suspended his campaign for Governor of California. The suspension came in the wake of a series of reports detailing harrowing accusations. A Friday report from the San Francisco Chronicle alleged that a former female aide accused Swalwell of sexually assaulting her twice while she was intoxicated.

The situation worsened when CNN released a corroborating bombshell, citing three additional women who accused the Congressman of sexual misconduct, ranging from inappropriate physical touch to sending unsolicited, sexually explicit messages.

The Statement of Surrender

By Monday morning, the pressure from both sides of the aisle became insurmountable. Even his fellow Democrats, fearful of the political fallout during President Trump’s second term, took to the Sunday news circuits to demand Swalwell’s immediate removal. Faced with an impending expulsion vote, Swalwell chose to step down.

In a statement that attempted to balance an apology with a defense of his actions, Swalwell said:

“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgement I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”

Swalwell also took a parting shot at the congressional process, expressing his grievances over the lack of what he termed "due process" regarding the calls for his ouster.

“I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.”

A Pattern of Misconduct?

Despite his repeated denials, the allegations have painted a disturbing picture of the California Democrat's behavior. The San Francisco Chronicle report detailed specific incidents, including an alleged 2024 assault in New York that is currently being scrutinized by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.

This latest scandal adds to a history of questionable judgment for Swalwell, who previously faced intense scrutiny for his ties to a suspected Chinese intelligence operative during his first several terms in office. For many constitutional conservatives, Swalwell’s departure is viewed as a necessary purging of a lawmaker who frequently placed political grandstanding above national sovereignty and personal integrity.

With the House Ethics Committee having already opened an investigation just hours before his announcement, Swalwell’s resignation appears to be a calculated move to avoid a public trial by his peers. As the 2026 midterms approach, the vacancy in California’s 14th district leaves a deep-blue seat in flux, while the Democrat primary for Governor remains in total disarray.
