DOJ Launches Probe After Chilling Report On Riot Funding

A political firestorm is erupting over who’s behind the increasingly violent anti-ICE riots sweeping through Los Angeles and other major U.S. cities — and whether left-wing nonprofits, backed by Democrat politicians, are secretly funding the chaos.

A growing investigation is zeroing in on groups like the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), a radical open-borders advocacy organization based in California, after it was accused of providing real-time support and resources to illegal demonstrators disrupting Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

According to Fox News Digital, even a California-based protest-for-hire company, Crowds on Demand, confirmed it had been approached to participate in the anti-ICE riots — but declined out of concern for potential criminal activity.

“We receive inquiries regarding practically every major social cause imaginable, and the anti-ICE demonstrations are no exception,” a spokesperson for the company said, adding that they rejected participation because they didn’t “want to get close to any form of illegal activity, including violence, vandalism or blocking off roads without a permit.”

The firm revealed these were "high-budget requests" — raising serious questions about who’s paying the bills.

Now, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism, has launched a formal probe into the funding network behind the unrest. In a statement posted to X, he made the stakes clear:

“Who is funding the LA riots? This violence isn’t spontaneous,” Hawley said. “As chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime & Terrorism, I’m launching an investigation to find out.”

Hawley issued letters to several groups, demanding immediate transparency, including CHIRLA — which he accused of giving “logistical support and financial resources” to rioters. He warned that “bankrolling civil unrest is not protected speech. It is aiding and abetting criminal conduct.”

Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) echoed those concerns, noting that CHIRLA not only received millions in taxpayer funds but also donated nearly $500,000 to support Governor Gavin Newsom’s campaign.

“The ‘nonprofit’ behind the LA riots donated almost $500,000 to support Newsom’s campaign. It then received $34 million in state funding. I’m sure this is all a coincidence,” Kiley posted sarcastically on X.

Kiley also disclosed that CHIRLA had previously led a campaign to abolish ICE and was caught alerting rioters in real-time to ICE operations, enabling mobs to physically obstruct federal law enforcement and reportedly engage in violence.

“The NGO known as CHIRLA was centrally involved in the LA riots… An investigation is absolutely appropriate and necessary,” Kiley told Fox News.

IRS data confirms CHIRLA has raked in $34 million in government grants, including nearly $2.25 million during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

Also under scrutiny is the Million Voter Project, another group tied to anti-ICE marches and previously aligned with efforts to protect Newsom during his recall fight. Both CHIRLA and the MVP deny any formal role in funding riots, and there's no direct proof — yet — that either group paid for illegal activity. But Republican lawmakers say the circumstantial evidence and money trail demand serious answers.

With ICE under siege in cities where Democrat leadership looks the other way — or worse, allegedly funds the chaos — the American people are left to wonder: Who’s protecting the law-abiding citizens, and who’s aiding the criminal mobs?
