Feds Launch Probe After ‘8647’ Markings Appear On National Mall

Federal authorities have opened an investigation after large markings reading “8647” appeared on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., triggering sharp criticism from the White House and renewed scrutiny of a number sequence already at the center of a criminal case involving former FBI Director James Comey.

The markings were discovered Thursday, prompting U.S. Park Police officers to respond to the scene and begin collecting evidence.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the discoloration on the grass.

“The cause of the discoloration has not yet been determined,” the U.S. Park Police said in a statement.

“Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing.”

An Interior Department spokesperson described the incident as vandalism and said federal officials are taking the matter seriously, particularly because the markings may be interpreted as targeting President Donald J. Trump.

“Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable,” the spokesperson said.

The appearance of “8647” has attracted national attention because the same number combination is central to the Justice Department’s prosecution of Comey.

Federal prosecutors have alleged that Comey threatened President Trump after posting an Instagram photo showing seashells arranged to display the numbers “8647.” Trump is both the 45th and 47th president of the United States.

Comey later deleted the post after public backlash and denied that he intended to promote violence.

“I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence,” Comey wrote on Instagram after removing the post.

“It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”

The former FBI director has since been indicted, while his attorneys are seeking to have the charges dismissed. His legal team argues the prosecution is selective and politically motivated.

Comey’s defenders have pointed out that the phrase “86 it” is often used in the restaurant industry to mean that an item is unavailable or should be removed from service.

The Trump administration, however, has treated the National Mall incident as another example of the disturbing political climate surrounding the president and the normalization of extreme anti-Trump rhetoric.

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle strongly condemned the markings and broader acceptance of political hostility.

“Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible,” Ingle said.

“They should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head.”

The White House has not identified any suspects, nor has it provided evidence linking the markings to a particular individual or organization.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, which would handle any potential criminal prosecution related to the incident, declined to comment.

Investigators have not said whether they believe the markings were intended as political speech, vandalism, or a threat. Authorities also have not announced whether surveillance footage or witnesses have helped identify those responsible.

The incident comes as debate continues over the meaning of “8647” and whether the number sequence should be treated as a political slogan, restaurant slang, or something more serious.

In Comey’s case, the Justice Department has argued that a reasonable person could interpret the message as a serious expression of intent to harm the president. Comey has maintained that was never his intent.

For now, investigators are focused on determining how the markings appeared on one of the most visible public spaces in the nation’s capital and who was responsible for placing them there.

The identity of those behind the display remains unknown as federal authorities continue collecting evidence and analyzing samples from the National Mall, Trending Politics reported.

Until investigators release more information, officials say the matter remains active and no final conclusions have been reached regarding motive, intent, or meaning.

The episode underscores a broader concern for conservatives: years of overheated anti-Trump rhetoric have created an environment where even symbols and slogans can carry serious implications. For federal authorities, the question now is whether the National Mall markings were merely vandalism — or part of a far more troubling pattern.
