Fetterman Rips ‘Smears’ Over Leaked Texts As Republican Defends Him
Sen. John Fetterman is rejecting a damaging report built partly around leaked staff communications, accusing anonymous critics of spreading “lies, half-truths, innuendos” and “smears” about his performance in office.
The Pennsylvania Democrat has also found a surprising defender in Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, who argues that disloyal staff members and left-wing political forces are attempting to punish Fetterman for refusing to obey the Democratic Party line.
The controversy erupted after a Wall Street Journal investigation depicted Fetterman as reluctant to attend constituent meetings, Senate hearings and other events typically associated with a senator’s daily responsibilities.
The allegations quickly drew attacks from Pennsylvania Democrats, including one lawmaker who openly suggested voters should remove Fetterman when he faces reelection in 2028.
“Per usual — lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears and anonymous,” Fetterman said in a statement responding to the allegations.
“No matter how many smears or stories, I’m proud to continue to deliver for Pennsylvania,” he added.
Leaked Messages Fuel Questions About Senate Duties
The Journal based its reporting partly on internal text messages and interviews with former staff members. Those sources claimed Fetterman resisted certain meetings with constituents and avoided some hearings and public appearances.
Among the reported examples were proposed meetings with representatives from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and paralyzed veterans.
The report also alleged that Fetterman has become increasingly focused on Israel and media appearances while distancing himself from conventional Democratic political activities and certain members of his staff.
Several Democrats responded with unusually personal criticism.
Rep. Chris Deluzio accused the senator of “pathetic behavior” and claimed he lacked an adequate “sense of duty.”
“He is not up for the high office he was elected to — and we in Pennsylvania will do something about it in 2028,” Deluzio wrote.
Rep. Brendan Boyle and Democratic National Committee Vice Chairman Malcolm Kenyatta have also criticized Fetterman. Meanwhile, the Journal reported that prospective Democratic challengers are weighing whether to confront him in the 2028 primary.
McCormick Accuses the Left of Trying to ‘Cancel’ Fetterman
While members of Fetterman’s own party intensified their attacks, McCormick stepped forward to defend his Democratic colleague.
“These stories are the latest example of outrageously disloyal staff and forces on the Left using anonymous leaks to cancel my friend John Fetterman,” McCormick wrote on X.
“They hate that he is an independent thinker who refuses to fall into line so they want to silence him,” the Republican senator added.
The defense highlights an increasingly familiar pattern on the Left: dissent is tolerated only until a Democrat strays too far from the party’s approved position. Fetterman has frustrated progressives by breaking with them on Israel, immigration and some of President Donald Trump’s administration nominees.
Although Fetterman entered the Senate in 2023 with a progressive reputation, his willingness to challenge Democratic orthodoxy has earned him unexpected respect from some conservatives—and growing hostility from activists within his own party.
An Unusual Bipartisan Alliance
Fetterman and McCormick have developed a notably cordial partnership despite representing opposing parties.
Fetterman has publicly called McCormick a friend and said he would not campaign against him if the Republican seeks reelection in 2030.
The senators also created a joint fundraising committee called Common Ground PA. Federal Election Commission records show that the committee, registered in July, includes Fetterman for PA and Friends of Dave McCormick as participating organizations.
McCormick said the senators plan to continue cooperating on priorities affecting Pennsylvania, including employment, housing, infrastructure and environmental funding.
Their alliance offers a sharp contrast with the hostility Fetterman now faces from prominent Democrats.
The immediate controversy concerns more than ideological disagreements, however. It raises questions about Fetterman’s accessibility to constituents and his participation in the ordinary responsibilities of his office.
Fetterman categorically disputes the claims and characterizes them as politically motivated attacks pushed by disgruntled former employees.
No prominent Democrat has formally launched a 2028 primary campaign against him, according to Fox News. Still, the public warnings from within his party suggest that the possibility is already shaping Pennsylvania politics.
For now, the political divide is unmistakable: Democrats are threatening Fetterman’s future, while his Republican Senate colleague is defending his independence and accusing the Left of trying to silence a lawmaker who refuses to fall in line.
