Former Democratic Rising Star Andrew Gillum Jailed Again After Alleged Meth Test
Andrew Gillum, once celebrated as one of the Democratic Party’s most promising political figures, is back behind bars after a judge revoked his bond over an alleged drug-testing violation.
The former Tallahassee mayor, who narrowly lost Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial election to Republican Ron DeSantis, was booked Thursday into the Baldwin County jail in Alabama. Gillum had been free on bond following his arrest last month on a felony drug possession charge.
According to reports, the 47-year-old failed to appear for a required drug screening. He was subsequently tested during a court appearance, and TMZ reported that the result was positive for methamphetamine.
Court-Ordered Drug Testing
Gillum had been enrolled in a court-supervised program known as “color code drug testing.”
Participants are assigned a color and must call a designated hotline each day. When their assigned color is announced, they are required to report for drug screening that same day.
Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney John Oxford said Gillum failed to report after his color was called, prompting the court to reconsider the conditions of his release.
From Democratic Celebrity to Repeated Controversy
The latest arrest marks another troubling chapter in the collapse of a political career that Democrats once believed could reach the national stage.
Gillum stunned Florida’s political establishment in 2018 by securing the Democratic nomination for governor. He then faced DeSantis in an exceptionally close general election, losing by approximately 32,000 votes.
Despite the defeat, Gillum emerged from the campaign with substantial national recognition and was widely regarded within Democratic circles as a potential future party leader.
That trajectory changed dramatically two years later.
Miami Beach Hotel Incident
In 2020, police discovered Gillum intoxicated inside a Miami Beach hotel room after a third person called 911. Travis Dyson, a male escort who was also present, had reportedly suffered an overdose.
Responding officers recovered suspected methamphetamine and bottles containing prescription medication. Prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges because investigators could not determine who owned the drugs.
Gillum later announced that he would enter rehabilitation, attributing his struggles to depression and alcohol dependency following his unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign.
“This has been a wake-up call for me,” Gillum said at the time.
“Since my race for governor ended, I fell into a depression that has led to alcohol abuse.”
He subsequently withdrew from public life while undergoing treatment.
Federal Prosecution Ended Without Retrial
Gillum encountered further legal jeopardy in 2022 when federal prosecutors charged him with conspiracy, wire fraud and making false statements in connection with an alleged campaign finance operation.
In May 2023, a jury acquitted him of lying to federal agents but could not reach verdicts on the remaining charges. Prosecutors later chose to dismiss the unresolved counts instead of pursuing another trial.
Felony Drug Charge Remains Pending
Gillum’s current legal difficulties stem from a separate felony drug possession charge connected to his July arrest. The consequences of the alleged bond violation—and reported positive methamphetamine test—for that case have not yet been determined.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 13.
Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross called Gillum’s continued decline “really sad.”
“Addiction is an illness,” Cross said. “He needs help. Not a podcast. Not a TV appearance. Clinical attention and support.”
Gillum’s case is ultimately a deeply personal story of addiction and collapse. But it is also a striking reminder of how quickly the Democratic Party’s celebrated political stars can fall from carefully cultivated national prominence into scandal and criminal proceedings.
