Grenell Leaving Post As Head of Trump Kennedy Center Ahead of Renovations
Ric Grenell will step aside Monday from his leadership role at the Trump Kennedy Center, handing the presidency to longtime facilities executive Matt Floca as the iconic Washington cultural venue prepares for a sweeping, multi-year transformation backed by President Donald J. Trump.
According to Axios, the leadership transition will be formally announced during a Board of Directors meeting at the White House. At the same meeting, board members are expected to approve a plan to close the 54-year-old institution for roughly two years to allow for a comprehensive renovation of the historic complex.
Grenell, who has overseen the campus since February 2025, will remain involved with the organization as an unpaid consultant. His successor, Matt Floca, currently serves as vice president of facilities operations and previously worked as associate director for sustainability and energy within the Washington, D.C., government.
Floca has already been in direct communication with President Trump as plans for the overhaul take shape. Axios reported that discussions have included everything from architectural upgrades to design changes — including paint selections, seating layouts, and the addition of marble features — all part of an ambitious vision for the center’s future.
Trump is expected to attend Monday’s board meeting and has reportedly developed a strong working relationship with Floca, a dynamic that could prove critical as the institution prepares for the most extensive renovation in its history.
Last month, the president announced that the marble-lined complex overlooking the Potomac River would close in July for what he described as a period of “Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding.” Congress previously approved $257 million in reconstruction funding through what Trump called a “big, beautiful bill,” giving the project substantial financial backing.
Trump has made clear that his goal is not merely restoration but transformation. The president has pledged to deliver a “new and spectacular Entertainment Complex” culminating in a “Grand Reopening that will rival and surpass anything that has ever taken place at such a facility before.”
Ahead of Grenell’s departure, the president publicly praised his work guiding the center through a transitional period.
“Ric Grenell has done an excellent job in helping to coordinate various elements of the Center during the transition period, and I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done,” Trump wrote on social media.
During the Trump administration, the Trump Kennedy Center has continued to host major events, including the annual honors ceremony and the FIFA World Cup draw. The upcoming reconstruction effort is expected to further elevate the venue’s status as a premier entertainment destination.
Grenell will remain busy in his other role as the president’s envoy for special missions, a position that has taken him around the globe as part of key diplomatic initiatives. During Trump’s first administration, Grenell served as U.S. ambassador to Germany and later as acting director of national intelligence.
Predictably, Democrats have criticized Trump’s decision to rename the institution and spearhead its revival. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) launched a sharp personal attack on Grenell over the weekend.
“Like a mob bust-out gone wrong, Trumpsters’ looting of the Kennedy Center has put it out of business, and now it needs to be “closed for renovations” as cover-up. No surprise he’s being replaced.”
Grenell did not hold back in his response, blasting the senator for what he described as years of political neglect that allowed the facility to deteriorate.
“Your buffoonery knows no limits,” he wrote on X in response to the criticism. “You sat silent while the place went into total disrepair. You sat silent while the staff was paid with monies designed to pay off the future $30 million loan coming due in 2030 because there was no money in the bank to pay salaries.”
Continuing, Grenell added: “You sat silent while corporations left because of the hard left woke programming. We fixed it. And we are doing the right thing to close the entire place in a few weeks to renovate it – because of your years of neglect. This Washington game of kicking the can down the road and never solving problems has ended with President Trump.”

He concluded: “It doesn’t matter what you or the New York Times or CNN says. We are fixing the place that YOU ruined. It becomes a construction site for two years because you failed to keep up with the maintenance. And we have a world-class construction leader to do it the right way. You are welcome.”
With renovations looming and new leadership stepping in, the Trump administration is betting that a complete rebuild — rather than political posturing — will restore one of Washington’s most prominent cultural institutions.
