"He Died a Hero": Mississippi Church Deacon Killed Shielding Children During Easter Event
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” – John 10:11
This verse took on a heartbreaking new meaning for a Mississippi congregation over the weekend.
During a family-focused Easter egg hunt hosted by Empowerment Ministries Christian Center in Gulfport, tragedy struck. Held at the Goldin Sports Complex, the event was meant to bring joy to the community. Instead, it became the scene of a fatal shooting.
Deacon Eddie Shed, 39, lost his life while courageously stepping in to protect others. According to WLOX, Shed acted selflessly, shielding children from a violent dispute that broke out—ultimately sacrificing himself in the process.
Authorities confirmed that the incident was tied to a child custody dispute. Tyran Deion Gable, 24, from nearby Saucier, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault. Witnesses say Gable allegedly approached the mother of his child with intent to harm, prompting Shed to intervene. That act of bravery cost him his life.
“He died a hero doing what he does best,” said church member Alexis Weathersby, per WLOX, “and that’s protecting and that’s loving and that’s looking out for everyone.”
Shed wasn’t just any church member—he led EMCC’s security team and was known for his servant heart. His final moments reflected a lifetime of putting others first.
EMCC’s pastor, Gregg Magee, shared heartfelt words about Shed’s impact, telling People Magazine, “He paid the ultimate price for his valor... Deacon Shed was a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope. His unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.”
In addition to Shed’s tragic death, two others were wounded. One was flown out of state with critical injuries; the other received treatment locally. Gable himself was injured in the exchange and later hospitalized.
The chaos unfolded just after the egg hunt concluded, around 2:05 p.m. Initially, three people were detained by Gulfport police, but only Gable has been officially charged.
On Sunday, EMCC held a live-streamed service to honor Shed and provide space for collective mourning. The church has since opened channels for donations to assist with funeral and medical expenses for those affected.
As Gulfport authorities continue their investigation, they’re urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
