Hunter Biden Reportedly Living Abroad As Legal Debt Dispute Unfolds
A newly surfaced court filing is shedding light on the ongoing financial and legal troubles facing Hunter Biden, revealing that the president’s son is currently residing outside the United States while grappling with significant unpaid debts.
The disclosure came in an April 6 filing in Washington, D.C., submitted by Biden’s attorney, Barry Coburn, as part of a lawsuit brought by the prominent law firm Winston & Strawn. The firm is seeking payment for legal services tied to Biden’s prior cases, alleging he has failed to settle outstanding bills.
According to the complaint, Biden “lives abroad” and is financially unable to meet his obligations, with the firm claiming he owes more than $50,000 for work performed over several years.
Coburn described his client as “impecunious,” underscoring a lack of sufficient funds to cover mounting legal costs. The filing further notes that Biden has been unable to retain key professional support—such as billing consultants, forensic accountants, or electronic discovery vendors—due to his financial constraints.
Millions in Debt and Legal Trouble
Biden has previously acknowledged the depth of his financial struggles. In a podcast appearance last year, he revealed he was carrying roughly $17 million in debt, much of it stemming from years of legal battles.
Those legal entanglements have included federal tax and firearms cases, in addition to multiple civil disputes. Notably, Abbe Lowell, a partner at Winston & Strawn, represented Biden during those proceedings—services that are now at the center of the payment dispute.
The firm’s lawsuit, originally filed in June, alleges that Biden failed to compensate them despite nearly three years of legal representation. The matter remains active in D.C. Superior Court.
Life Overseas Raises Questions
While the filing stops short of naming Biden’s current location, he has spent considerable time abroad in recent years, particularly in Cape Town, where his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, has family ties.
In a previous interview, Biden described splitting his time between the U.S. and South Africa, stating: “We’re trying to be between Cape Town and the States. We go back and forth.”

He also praised the city, calling it “the most beautiful city in the world,” highlighting his part-time lifestyle outside the United States.
Despite his overseas residence, Biden continues to travel back to America. Social media posts have shown him attending family gatherings in California, including a recent Easter event with relatives and his father, Joe Biden.

Financial Lifelines and Fading Art Sales
Biden’s financial situation has also been buoyed by private assistance. Reports indicate he received more than $6 million in loans from attorney Kevin Morris, funds that were reportedly used to address tax liabilities and legal fees.
In an effort to generate income, Biden turned to the art world, where his paintings brought in over $1 million between 2021 and 2024. However, recent filings suggest that market interest has sharply declined.
In a March 2025 court document, Biden stated he had sold just one piece since December 2023—for $36,000—raising further concerns about his ability to meet ongoing financial obligations.
Ongoing Legal Battle
The latest filing underscores the continuing legal and financial strain surrounding Biden, as litigation over unpaid legal fees presses forward.
With debts mounting, income streams drying up, and his residence now reportedly overseas, the case adds yet another chapter to a long-running saga that continues to raise serious questions about accountability, financial responsibility, and the broader implications for a family long embedded in Washington’s political elite.
