Jasmine Crockett Faces Backlash Over ‘Broken Code-Switch’ Speech

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is facing mounting criticism after a viral video showed her dramatically altering her speaking style, sparking accusations that she was putting on a performance rather than being authentic.

“Baby, cuz deez people, day are crazy, because they always talking bout how Christian they is, yet I don’t know how many dem on dat side are getting divorced cuz they gettin’ caught up sleepin’ with they coworkers, staffers, interns, all the things,” Crockett said in the clip.

Critics quickly blasted the shift in tone. Comedian Joe DeVito remarked, “Her code switch is broken.” Others compared her to an actor who had lost herself in a role. Conservative commentator Bonchie called it “an act,” noting that Crockett is highly educated and grew up in an affluent area far removed from the “street persona” she now projects.

Matt Whitlock shared a side-by-side video showing Crockett’s polished tone in Congress compared to her new style, writing: “There’s ‘code switching’ then there’s ‘playing a character from TV.’”

Adding to the controversy, the New York Post published a damning report this week describing Crockett as a “diva” who mistreats staff, rarely shows up in her Washington, D.C. office, and focuses more on media appearances than serving her district.

“She is laying around her apartment, won’t come into the office, and is really just indifferent to staff and will scream at them,” one former aide alleged, adding she is “very disengaged.” Another described her as being obsessed with landing TV spots like The View rather than tackling constituent concerns.

The report paints Crockett as someone more interested in playing the role of influencer than legislator, demanding luxury perks such as chauffeured Escalades for short trips and insisting staffers act as personal attendants.

Her office, according to multiple sources, has become a “toxic environment” marked by high turnover and complaints from Black female staffers who say they feel disrespected and disempowered.

Crockett, who has represented Texas in Congress since 2023, is one of the chamber’s loudest anti-Trump voices, often making headlines for her profanity-laced attacks on the former president. Yet critics say her recent controversies show she is more focused on theatrics than substance.
