Justice Dept. Arrests Leading Democrat
Another Democrat lawmaker is in hot water after being indicted on serious federal charges—and the scandal is only deepening.
Massachusetts state Rep. Chris Flanagan, a Democrat from Dennis Port, is now under a court order that bars him from gambling, running up credit card balances over $5,000, or opening any new credit lines above that amount without approval from a federal judge.
The new restrictions were imposed after federal prosecutors revealed that Flanagan—already facing wire fraud and records falsification charges—was drowning in personal debt even while drawing over $180,000 annually from two public-facing roles.

View PlansIn April, Flanagan was arrested for allegedly embezzling $36,000 from his former employer, the Cape Cod Home Builders Association (HBA), to fund personal luxuries, political expenses, and even "psychic services." Despite pleading not guilty, prosecutors from U.S. Attorney Leah Foley’s office moved to tighten the Democrat lawmaker’s release conditions.
“The government believes that certain conditions related to the defendant’s finances are necessary in this case,” prosecutors wrote in a July 22 filing, per the Boston Herald. “The government has conferred with the counsel for the defendant regarding the addition of certain financial conditions, and the parties agree (to the new conditions).”
While Flanagan’s lawyer, Greg Henning, claims the limitations were part of the original release terms, the new filing makes those conditions legally binding.
Flanagan stands accused of executing five wire transfers between November 2021 and January 2023 while serving as executive director of the HBA. The indictment alleges he misappropriated funds to cover mortgage payments, rack up luxury spending, and bankroll his own political campaign—all while fabricating fake personas to hide his misconduct.
“This alleged scheme was calculated on every level,” U.S. Attorney Foley said in a blistering press release.
“According to the indictment, Mr. Flanagan defrauded the very organization he was supposed to serve—allegedly funneling tens of thousands of dollars into his own pockets to pay off personal bills, buy luxury items and bankroll his political campaign. He allegedly stole money and then went to extraordinary lengths to cover it up... The people of Massachusetts deserve better.”

Officials involved in the investigation echoed Foley’s condemnation.
Ketty Larco-Ward, Inspector in Charge at the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Boston Division, said:
“Flanagan’s egregious betrayal to his positions of trust and his deplorable actions of lining his own pockets for personal or political reasons are unacceptable.”
IRS-Criminal Investigation Acting Special Agent Thomas Demeo added:
“The indictment of Christopher Flanagan demonstrates IRS – Criminal Investigation’s commitment to rooting out public corruption, at all levels of government.”

View PlansFlanagan currently faces five counts of wire fraud and one count of falsifying records. If convicted, he could face years behind bars. In the meantime, he remains free under strict conditions—including the court’s insistence that he remain employed or be actively seeking new work.
His current status as a sitting member of the Massachusetts House raises broader questions about the ethical rot in Democratic politics—especially as the Biden-era Democratic Party continues to portray itself as a moral authority on government ethics and financial responsibility.
