Kamala Gets Bad Election News After Taylor Swift Endorsement

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign is hopeful that Taylor Swift’s recent endorsement will energize younger voters, as there's been noticeable "underperformance" in that demographic.

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten highlighted in national surveys that President Joe Biden had a 28-point lead among voters aged 18–29 in September 2020. By the time Biden withdrew from his reelection bid in July of this year, his lead had dropped to seven points. When Harris assumed the top of the ticket in September, the gap increased to a 15-point advantage.

“Kamala Harris will absolutely welcome Taylor Swift’s support if it helps mobilize young voters. The fact is, Harris is not performing as well among younger voters as Democrats typically do, based on historical trends,” Enten told CNN’s Kate Bolduan.

Enten pointed out that Swift’s influence might also help in voter registration, an area where Democrats are currently facing challenges. In key battleground states like North Carolina and Pennsylvania, Democratic voter registrations have decreased compared to 2020. In Pennsylvania, 560,000 people registered as Democrats in September 2020, but that number fell to 169,000 by September 2023. North Carolina saw a similar drop from 415,000 to 128,000.

“Republicans have done a significantly better job registering voters and flipping Democratic registrations to Republican over the past four years,” Enten noted.

Swift, who endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020, declared her support for Harris shortly after the presidential debate between Harris and former President Donald Trump on Tuesday. In an Instagram post, Swift expressed her intent to vote for Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in the 2024 election, citing Harris’s leadership and dedication to causes such as LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, and healthcare.

Swift emphasized that her choice was based on research, encouraging her followers to do the same: “Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.”
