Lawmaker Shot to Death in Apparent Assassination, Bongino Says FBI Is 'Fully Engaged' on the Ground
Minnesota is reeling after two high-profile Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were gunned down in separate home invasions just hours apart Saturday morning—an attack Gov. Tim Walz admits was politically motivated.
According to MSNBC News, Rep. Melissa Hortman, the former speaker of the Minnesota House, and her husband Mark Hortman were shot and killed inside their Brooklyn Park home in a targeted early-morning attack. Just hours earlier, at approximately 2 a.m., State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were also shot in their Champlin, Minnesota home—just a few miles away. The Hoffmans survived and are recovering in the hospital.

The suspect remains at large and is believed to have posed as a police officer. Witnesses and police confirm he wore a badge, tactical vest, carried a stun gun, and drove an SUV resembling a police cruiser. The level of deception and coordination has stunned law enforcement and lawmakers alike.

The Minnesota State Patrol later released images showing flyers labeled “No Kings” inside the suspect’s vehicle—linked to anti-Trump protests that were scheduled to take place across Minnesota. Authorities swiftly canceled the demonstrations, citing public safety concerns and the politically charged nature of the attacks.
The SUV also contained a hit list of names, according to NPR, and both Hortman and Hoffman were reportedly listed. Sen. Tina Smith, another Democrat, confirmed that her name was also on the list, raising fears of a broader political assassination plot. All three were seen together the night before at a Democrat fundraising dinner.
Federal and state agencies are now fully engaged in the manhunt. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed the Bureau’s involvement and vowed accountability: “The FBI is fully engaged on the ground in Minnesota and is working in collaboration with our local and state partners,” Bongino posted on X.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for residents in Brooklyn Park as the suspect is believed to be armed, dangerous, and potentially targeting more lawmakers.
President Donald J. Trump addressed the nation via Truth Social following the tragedy.
“I have been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against State Lawmakers,” Trump wrote.
“Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI, are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!”
