Lightning Strike Near Anti-Erika Kirk Protest Draws Attention During Hillsdale Commencement

A strange and dramatic moment unfolded Saturday at Hillsdale College in Michigan when lightning reportedly struck a tree only feet away from demonstrators protesting Erika Kirk during her commencement address.

According to a report from The Daily Caller, Hillsdale history professor Bradley J. Birzer shared a photo on X showing the aftermath of the strike near the protest area.

“Lightning hit this tree during the anti Erika Kirk protest. No joke. Just feet from the protesters,” Birzer wrote.

The incident quickly sparked reactions online from conservatives and supporters of Turning Point USA.

Conservative commentator Josiah Lippincott responded on X, “Yeah, Charlie is keeping an eye out for us.”

The comment referenced the late Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated during a Turning Point USA campus event in Orem last September.

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet also weighed in on social media, posting:

“This weekend, Erika gave the commencement address at Hillsdale College, which of course drew some protesters… Then lightening struck a tree, literally feet away from where they gathered.”

Local outlet WILX-TV reported that the protest involved several dozen demonstrators organized by a group called Hope in Action. The organization accused Turning Point USA of promoting what it described as “MAGA politics,” opposition to transgender ideology, resistance to DEI initiatives, and broader “culture-war extremism.”

The group stated:

“We are protesting the normalization of extremism. Giving honorary degrees and commencement platforms to figures tied to this movement tells students and the public that hate, disinformation, and authoritarian politics deserve celebration.”

Hope in Action member Allison Bader told WILX:

“We are here to make sure it is clear that we are not going to accept blatant racism, homophobia, and sexism in our communities any longer, and they have been continuously perpetuating Turning Point USA and Project 2025, and we want to put an end to that.”

The rhetoric echoed a broader pattern frequently seen on college campuses, where conservative speakers and organizations face organized protests and accusations simply for defending traditional values, parental rights, border security, and constitutional freedoms.

The atmosphere surrounding the event carried additional emotional weight given the tragic death of Charlie Kirk. Authorities say Tyler Robinson, the alleged assassin, texted his boyfriend on the day of the shooting that he targeted Kirk because, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

Meanwhile, Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn honored both Erika and her late husband during the commencement ceremony. According to the New York Post, Arnn awarded two honorary degrees for public service, one to Erika Kirk and another posthumously to Charlie Kirk.

During her roughly 15-minute address to approximately 400 graduates, Erika Kirk shared personal memories about her husband, including a humorous story from their honeymoon.

“I’m almost done… I can’t skip them,” Charlie once told her while listening to one of Larry Arnn’s lectures during a workout session in their hotel gym.

“Baby, you do what you got to do. I’m here for you. But I enjoyed it because I was learning about Winston Churchill, too, when he was working out I was working out. It was a great little bonding moment,” Erika said.

She later encouraged graduates to live purposeful and disciplined lives grounded in conviction and moral clarity.

“As you continue forward in life, I want you to kind of embrace the similar blueprint of my husband, where he loved to point out that God made us purposeful beings and continue forward in life with clarity and intention.”

“And you will come to understand that life is not defined by the abundance of options, but by the weight of the choices that you make within them. And those choices, more often than not, are not dramatic or obvious, but quiet and compounding, forming the blueprint of your life long before anyone else can see what you are building.”
