Los Angeles Bleeding Residents As Life Worsens Under Newsom, Dems

As President Donald J. Trump continues to implement his "America First" agenda in Washington, the stark contrast between federal restoration and state-level decay has never been more apparent than in California. New data from the U.S. Census Bureau confirms what many have long suspected: the radical policies of Governor Gavin Newsom and the Democratic supermajority are driving taxpayers out of the Golden State in record numbers.

Los Angeles County has earned the unenviable title of the nation’s leader in population decline. Between July 2024 and July 2025, approximately 54,000 residents fled the county, continuing a disastrous multi-year downward spiral for the nation’s most populous region, the New York Post reported. Since 2020, Los Angeles County has seen its population plummet from over 10 million residents to just under 9.7 million, according to reporting by KTLA.

The High Cost of Leftist Governance

While Newsom often boasts of California’s massive economy, the reality on the ground tells a different story of homelessness, skyrocketing rents, and a hostile business environment. While the Iranian conflict has pressured energy markets globally, California’s self-inflicted regulatory burdens have caused gas prices to shoot upward in recent weeks, further punishing the working class.

The exodus isn’t just a coastal phenomenon; it’s a systemic rejection of the Sacramento status quo. While San Francisco and LA empty out, nearby regions with slightly more breathing room—like Riverside and San Bernardino counties—added more than 21,000 residents combined. Even more telling is the surge in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, which saw an increase of more than 20,000 as Californians seek refuge in states that respect their wallets and their freedoms.

Border Security and the Demographic Shift

A significant driver of the shifting numbers is the restoration of the rule of law at our southern border. After four years of the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border disaster, President Trump moved rapidly in early 2025 to secure the nation. This return to constitutional sovereignty has resulted in a 65 percent year-over-year decline in international migration into regions like San Diego, which lost 5,000 residents in 2025 after briefly seeing gains during the era of unrestricted entry.

The end of the federal "welcome mat" for illegal immigration has exposed the fragility of California’s population model. For years, Democrats relied on high levels of immigration to mask the fact that native-born citizens were fleeing high costs and failing schools.

“When you pull back that inflow, the underlying weaknesses become more visible,” longtime University of Southern California demographer Dowell Myers told the Union-Tribune.

A Warning for 2028

As Newsom reportedly eyes a 2028 presidential run, he faces a daunting record. His likely opponent, Vice President JD Vance, will undoubtedly point to the "California Model" as a cautionary tale of what happens when far-left ideology meets reality. In 2025 alone, 30 of California’s 58 counties experienced overall population losses.

“These new figures come amid a broader trend of population decline in California,” The Post reported. “Between 2010 and 2024, nearly 10 million people left the state, primarily driven by high living costs and housing affordability challenges, resulting in a net loss of more than 250,000 residents per year in recent years, according to the California Institute for Public Policy.”

As President Trump’s second term focuses on American prosperity and secure borders, California remains a glaring outlier—a once-great state being hollowed out by the very people sworn to protect it.
