Mamdani Makes Controversial Move As Conflict With Iran Intensifies

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing renewed scrutiny after hosting controversial anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil and his family for a Ramadan dinner at the historic mayoral residence, Gracie Mansion.

According to The New York Post, Khalil — a Syrian-born activist and former graduate student at Columbia University — attended the gathering alongside his wife Noor and their young son, Deen. The event was held during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a period when many Muslims fast from dawn until sunset before gathering in the evening to share a meal that breaks the fast.

Mamdani publicly highlighted the dinner in an Instagram post Monday, sharing a photo from the evening that showed his wife, Rama Duwaji, holding a plate of food while standing beside Khalil, who appeared smiling during the meal.

“Last night, as we marked the one-year anniversary of his detention, Rama and I were honored to welcome Mahmoud, Noor, and their son Deen to Gracie Mansion to break our fast together,” Mamdani wrote.

The dinner comes amid continuing controversy surrounding Khalil’s legal battles and political activism.

Khalil was arrested early last year by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and has been fighting deportation proceedings since. Officials in the administration of current President Donald J. Trump accused Khalil of committing fraud on his green card application.

Federal authorities have also alleged that Khalil has expressed support for Hamas, the Palestinian militant group responsible for the devastating October 7 Hamas attack on Israel in 2023.

The Trump administration has reportedly relied in part on a rarely used federal statute allowing noncitizens to be deported if their beliefs or actions are deemed a potential threat to U.S. foreign policy interests.

Despite those allegations, Mamdani used his social media post to praise Khalil and highlight the difficulties the activist and his family faced during the past year.

For Mamdani, Khalil’s year “has been marked by profound hardship—and by profound courage,” he wrote.

“And yet, even in the face of that cruelty, there has also been beauty. New Yorkers raising their voices in solidarity. A city refusing to look away. Mahmoud won his freedom, and a father was finally reunited with his child,” the mayor added.

Khalil spent several months in federal custody at a detention facility in Louisiana while his case moved through the courts. During that time, his son was born while he remained in ICE custody.

“Mahmoud is a New Yorker, and he belongs in New York City,” Mamdani wrote.

The mayor has repeatedly defended Khalil throughout the legal fight. Earlier this year, Mamdani argued that Khalil’s arrest raised serious questions about the protection of political speech in the United States.

“I see this attack on him as part of a larger attack on the freedom of speech that is especially pronounced when it comes to the use of that speech to stand up for policy to human rights,” Mamdani said at a press conference in January.

Still, Khalil’s own remarks about the October 7 terrorist attacks have intensified criticism.

In an interview with The New York Times, Khalil referred to the massacre as a pivotal moment in the Palestinian struggle.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t avoid such a moment,” Khalil said. “To me, it felt frightening that we had to reach this moment in the Palestinian struggle.”

Critics argued that the statement appeared to rationalize or excuse the atrocities carried out by Hamas during the assault on Israel.

The White House condemned the comments at the time, accusing Khalil of minimizing the brutality of the attacks.

Controversy surrounding Khalil deepened further after he appeared at an anti-Israel rally in New York City following his release from detention.

During the demonstration, Khalil quoted alleged Hamas terrorist and Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al‑Sharif, who was killed in an Israeli missile strike last August.

“The time is now, the bridges towards liberation start with us,” Khalil said as he repeated what he described as al-Sharif’s final words.

The dinner at Gracie Mansion underscores the ongoing political and legal controversy surrounding Khalil, while also highlighting the broader debate over immigration enforcement, national security, and political activism in America’s largest city.
