Media Failure: Reporter Who Sat on Swalwell Misconduct Tips Now Blames Conservative Media
The disgrace of Eric Swalwell continues to ripple through the swamp, but the latest chapter isn't just about the former Congressman’s predatory behavior—it’s about the institutional rot of the legacy media. Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, a reporter who once preened over her coverage of Swalwell’s ties to Chinese intelligence, has found herself at the center of a firestorm of her own making.
As President Donald J. Trump continues to dismantle the deep state and restore accountability in Washington during his second term, the media’s role in protecting preferred liberal "stars" is being laid bare. Allen-Ebrahimian, who broke the 2020 story for Axios regarding Swalwell’s compromise by Chinese spy Fang Fang, recently admitted she had heard "rumors" of his sexual misconduct years ago but chose not to pursue them.
While Swalwell’s political career has collapsed following his resignation from Congress, the focus has shifted to the "journalists" who enabled him. Allen-Ebrahimian’s defense for her silence? It "wasn’t her beat."
The "Not My Beat" Defense
The logic is as thin as a campaign promise. Allen-Ebrahimian’s primary focus was Chinese infiltration and the compromising of American politicians. Yet, when she possessed information that could gravely compromise a high-ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, she sat on it.
Facing a barrage of criticism from conservative outlets and social media, the reporter—who now serves as head of China investigations at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute—attempted to justify her inaction in a series of now-deleted posts.
“Rumors about Eric Swalwell’s sexual misconduct have swirled in D.C. for years,” Allen-Ebrahimian wrote. “I first heard these rumors in 2020, in the course of my other reporting about Swalwell. I was neither a politics reporter nor a women’s issues reporter, so I could not chase them down.”
The backlash was immediate. A national security reporter hearing that a top official is potentially a serial predator—a massive leverage point for any foreign intelligence agency—is the definition of a "beat."
The public didn't buy the excuse, as seen in the social media reaction:

She doubled down, stating:
“I very much wanted to report it out myself. But #MeToo stories on the Hill aren’t related to my beat, as much as I personally wish I could report them out. I passed the tip along to colleagues on the Hill beat,” she wrote in this post.
I did not play it down. I very much wanted to report it out myself. But MeToo stories on the Hill aren't related to my beat, as much as I personally wish I could report them out. I passed the tip along to colleagues on the Hill beat.

Deflecting to the Right
In a breathtaking display of "the best defense is a good offense," Allen-Ebrahimian has now pivoted to blaming the very outlets that actually held Swalwell’s feet to the fire. Posting a screenshot of an article from The Federalist that criticized her, she attempted to deflect blame toward the conservative media ecosystem.
“Fox News has one of the biggest and best-funded newsrooms in the US. Why didn’t Fox News publish an investigation into Swalwell’s sexual misconduct? Why didn’t Breitbart? Newsmax? The Daily Caller? And why is no one in the right-wing media ecosystem asking these questions?” she asked in a tweet.

She further claimed that the failure was a result of conservative media being unable to "demonstrate to Democratic staffers" that they are "fair and professional news outlets who can be trusted with sensitive information."
“What we’ve witnessed here is a years-long, catastrophic failure of conservative media to demonstrate to Democratic staffers that they are fair and professional news outlets who can be trusted with sensitive information,” she said. “Fox News should have been all over Swalwell’s sexual misconduct years ago. It wasn’t.”

The Truth About Conservative Reporting
The irony is thick. It was conservative media that kept the Fang Fang story alive when the legacy press wanted it buried. It was conservative media that led the charge on Anthony Weiner’s sexting scandals, exposed the depravity surrounding Democratic donor Ed Buck, and broke the story of the Hunter Biden laptop—a story the establishment media actively suppressed.
Allen-Ebrahimian’s attempt to blame the right for her own professional failure is a hallmark of the modern liberal journalist: take credit for the "scoop" when it's safe, and blame your ideological opponents when your complicity is exposed.
