‘Missing Person’ Posters Featuring McConnell Go Up Throughout DC

Sen. Mitch McConnell has remained absent from the Senate for more than six weeks following his hospitalization, fueling growing demands for transparency about the Kentucky Republican’s condition.

Initial reports suggested McConnell suffered a cardiac emergency, but his office later said he fell at home, briefly lost consciousness and developed a “mild case of pneumonia.”

His staff has since released two photographs showing the 84-year-old senator with his wife, Elaine Chao, along with statements saying he is undergoing intensive rehabilitation.

The limited updates have not ended public skepticism.

On Wednesday night, satirical missing-person flyers featuring McConnell’s photograph appeared around Washington, including near the Capitol complex.

The flyers described him as “turtle-like” and “tortoise-like” and joked that he was “known for blocking something in the Senate.”

“If you have any information about his whereabouts, please keep it to yourself,” the flyer reads. “He would.”

The flyers were distributed by the Save America Movement, an anti-Trump political organization founded by former Republican strategist Steve Schmidt.

“We put those flyers up because this has gotten absurd,” a spokesperson for SAM wrote.

“For more than a month now, the senior senator from Kentucky has not cast a vote, has not appeared for the work of the chamber, and has not, in any provable or functional sense, represented the four and a half million people who sent him there,” the spokesperson added.

Schmidt also mocked the secrecy surrounding McConnell’s health during an appearance on The Daily Beast podcast.

“The lie has so strangled the truth that whether a man who served in the United States Senate since 1985… turned into a force and a joke around the world, whether he’s alive or not,” Schmidt said.

“This is like the penultimate episode of a writer’s fantasy ending for Veep,” he added.

McConnell was hospitalized June 14 after emergency personnel responded to a report of an unconscious person at his Washington-area home.

His office released a photograph July 12 showing him in a hospital bed beside Chao while holding that morning’s Washington Post. Another image released Monday showed the couple seated together as McConnell said he was “working hard to get back to my full schedule” in the Senate.

The Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell is participating in a “strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation” but has not yet been medically cleared to return.

Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear is now demanding that McConnell directly address his constituents or resign.

In a letter copied to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Beshear called for greater transparency about whether McConnell remains capable of fulfilling his duties.

McConnell plans to retire when his term ends in January 2027. Until he returns publicly or provides a direct update, questions surrounding his condition and ability to serve are likely to continue.
