A Missouri Democrat who had just secured reelection was arrested Wednesday in Jefferson City after police responded to a report of threats near the State Capitol complex.

State Rep. Anthony Ealy, who represents part of Jackson County, was taken into custody at the scene after officers investigated a reported disturbance that afternoon.

Police said officers were sent around 2:16 p.m. to the 300 block of East McCarty Street, an area surrounded by state government buildings in downtown Jefferson City.

The location is close to the Missouri State Capitol and several state government buildings. Based on the initial information released by police, however, the incident was separate from Ealy's legislative duties.

After speaking with those involved, the Jefferson City Police Department identified Ealy as the suspect. He was booked on suspicion of fourth-degree assault and second-degree peace disturbance.

What Police and Posts Online Say

Ealy was transported to the Cole County Jail. Police said the investigation remained active and did not immediately identify the alleged victim or explain what prompted the confrontation.

Posts circulating online that cite court documents claim Ealy lunged at a man outside a Jefferson City business and repeatedly said, "I'm gonna kill you. Call the police, I'm gonna k*ll you."

Those same posts say he also claimed to have a firearm and that he was being held without bond. Authorities had not publicly detailed those allegations in their initial announcement.

As with any arrest, the allegations remain accusations. Ealy has not been convicted of any crime, and prosecutors had not announced whether formal charges would be filed.

Under Missouri law, fourth-degree assault can include attempting to cause injury or threatening another person, while second-degree peace disturbance can involve threats made under alarming circumstances.

Who Is Anthony Ealy?

Ealy represents Missouri House District 34, which includes portions of Lee's Summit and the surrounding area. He served on the Lee's Summit City Council before entering the legislature.

He was first elected to the Missouri House in 2020 and won reelection in 2022 and 2024. He previously worked in information technology and served in the U.S. Army and Missouri Army National Guard.

The timing has drawn attention because the arrest came only a day after Tuesday's midterm elections, as lawmakers prepare for the next session of the General Assembly.

What Happens Next

An arrest alone does not remove a state representative from office. The Missouri House has rules governing member conduct, but any discipline would depend on further developments and decisions by House leadership.

Missouri lawmakers have faced disciplinary proceedings in past cases involving criminal allegations, though the House reviews each situation individually and has not signaled what, if anything, it will do here.

Ealy had not issued a detailed public statement as reports spread, and the House Democratic Caucus had not announced any action against him.

More information could come out if prosecutors file charges and supporting court documents become public. For now, the Jefferson City Police Department says its investigation into the disturbance is still active.

The case now moves toward prosecutors, who will decide whether the evidence supports charges. Until then, key details about the alleged confrontation are still waiting to be released by authorities.
