Ocasio-Cortez Rips ICE Shooting, Claims It Was Act Of ‘Murder’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., ignited further controversy Wednesday after publicly condemning the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, branding the incident a “murder” and calling for criminal prosecution of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent involved.

Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, was shot and killed on Wednesday, Jan. 7, by an ICE agent in an encounter that has quickly become a political flashpoint. The Department of Homeland Security has stated that the shooting occurred after Good allegedly attempted to strike a federal immigration officer with her vehicle during an enforcement operation just blocks from her home.

The incident has drawn emotional reactions from local activists and Democratic officials, while Republicans argue it represents the predictable consequence of months of inflammatory rhetoric directed at ICE and federal law enforcement. DHS has repeatedly warned that assaults against its agents have surged by as much as 1,000 percent amid sustained attacks from Democratic leaders and left-wing activists who routinely label immigration officers as “nazis” and racists.

Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks followed that familiar pattern. She described the shooting as “murder” and declared, “Murders in cold blood need to be prosecuted.” She further alleged, “This has now become what we feared most about ICE for a long time—that it would be used as an anti-civilian force with no accountability.”

She also attempted to tie the shooting to the death of George Floyd, saying, “We’ve seen what happened to this woman just a few blocks away from where George Floyd was murdered.”

“What we saw today was a criminal murder. A woman was shot in the head while trying to flee, and this is every American’s worst nightmare of their government turning into a tyranny,” she continued.

When pressed on whether the ICE agent should be arrested, Ocasio-Cortez doubled down. “I think what we saw was murder today and it needs to be prosecuted.” Addressing DHS claims that Good attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon, she added, “Their editorializing of this event to justify a public murder is disgusting.”

Those accusations, which remain unsubstantiated as investigations continue, are widely viewed by critics as reckless and likely to further inflame anti-law-enforcement sentiment on the left—an outcome many believe is precisely the goal.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem offered a sharply different account. She stated that Good allegedly “was trying to block officers with her vehicle, had been harassing them throughout the day, and attempted to run a law enforcement officer over.” Noem also confirmed that the ICE agent who fired the fatal shot was struck by Good’s vehicle, transported to a hospital, treated, and later released.

Noem emphasized that ICE agents have made more than 1,500 arrests in Minnesota alone and pointed to Democratic-backed “sanctuary” policies as a major driver of rising hostility toward federal officers attempting to enforce immigration law.

Other prominent Democrats quickly joined Ocasio-Cortez in condemning ICE. Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar called for agents to leave Minneapolis altogether, declaring, “ICE must stop terrorizing our communities and leave our city.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, facing mounting scrutiny over alleged fraud tied to his administration, also weighed in. Responding to a DHS post on X, Walz wrote, “I’ve seen the video. Don’t believe this propaganda machine. The state will ensure there is a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey echoed those demands during a heated press conference.

“I have a message for ICE. To ICE: Get the f*** out of Minneapolis,” Frey said. “We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety, and you are doing exactly the opposite.

“People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Long-term Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized. Now, somebody is dead. That’s on you, and it’s also on you to leave. It’s on you to make sure that further damage, further loss of life and injury is not done,” he further claimed.

Under President Donald J. Trump’s second-term administration, DHS has consistently warned that demonizing federal law enforcement has real-world consequences. As investigations continue, Republicans argue that political leaders who vilify ICE while encouraging resistance to immigration enforcement bear responsibility for the increasingly dangerous environment facing officers tasked with upholding federal law.
