Platner Stuns With Final Message As He Ends Senate Bid
Maine Democrat Graham Platner formally withdrew from the U.S. Senate race Friday, bringing an already scandal-ridden campaign to an extraordinary end with a profane attack on federal immigration enforcement.
Platner submitted his official withdrawal letter to Maine election officials days after suspending his campaign amid serious allegations from former girlfriends. Rather than leaving the race quietly, however, the Democrat used the final lines of the document to promote several far-left political causes.
Platner Celebrates Primary Victory in Withdrawal Letter
In the letter, which was later posted on X, Platner reflected on winning the Democratic primary one month earlier with more than 156,000 votes.
“People are desperate for change,” Platner wrote, arguing that the result demonstrated widespread dissatisfaction with the political establishment.
He added, “Mainers voted for a new kind of politics. One that is representative of people down here in the real world — not billionaires, oligarchs or the political establishment.”
Platner then ended the official election document with a profane statement targeting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, followed by slogans supporting the Palestinian cause and Irish republicanism.
The message ended, “F*** ICE. Free Palestine. Up the Hearts.”
The inflammatory conclusion immediately drew attention and ensured that Platner’s departure would generate almost as much controversy as the allegations that forced him from the race.
Former Girlfriend Accuses Platner of Rape
Platner suspended his campaign Wednesday after former girlfriend Jenny Racicot accused him of entering her home without permission and raping her in 2021.
Platner has denied wrongdoing.
When announcing the suspension, he claimed the timing of the allegation showed that powerful political interests were attempting to remove him before Maine’s withdrawal deadline.
“This was the last week to try to get me off of the ballot. And that’s why this is occurring,” Platner said in a video statement Wednesday.
He also blamed “large forces,” the “corporate media” and the “political establishment” for what he characterized as an organized campaign to destroy his candidacy.
Despite those accusations, Platner ultimately withdrew before the state’s July 13 deadline.
Democratic Organizations Abandon Campaign
The Maine Democratic Party withdrew its support following the allegations.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also announced that it would not invest resources in Platner’s campaign if he remained the party’s nominee.
His formal withdrawal now allows Maine Democrats to choose a replacement candidate through a party convention rather than enter the November election with Platner still on the ballot.
State election officials confirmed that they received his withdrawal notice. Democratic leaders have until July 27 to organize a convention and select a nominee to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Several Democrats have expressed interest in replacing Platner, including former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, former public health official Nirav Shah, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, Maine Beer Co. co-founder Dan Kleban, former Capitol Hill staffer Jordan Wood, social worker Paige Loud and Democratic state Rep. Valli Geiger.
Additional Allegations Rocked Platner Campaign
The rape allegation was not the only controversy surrounding Platner before he left the race.
Another former girlfriend accused him of physically abusing her during a relationship more than a decade ago. Platner has faced additional scrutiny over claims made by a former campaign aide, who alleged that he exchanged sexual messages with multiple women who were not his wife around the time he launched his Senate bid.
Past Reddit posts attributed to Platner also resurfaced during the campaign. According to The New York Post, the comments included criticism of a Purple Heart recipient and remarks mocking victims of sexual assault.
The campaign had previously faced backlash over a tattoo described by critics as containing Nazi-related imagery, as well as Platner’s past comments concerning a wounded military veteran.
Platner disputed or attempted to explain several of the controversies, but the accumulating allegations ultimately became politically unsustainable.
Democrats Face Questions Over Early Support
Platner’s collapse also raises uncomfortable questions for Democratic leaders and activists who initially embraced his candidacy despite warning signs surrounding his personal history and previous public statements.
Party organizations did not abandon him until the latest allegations made continued support politically damaging.
That pattern is likely to fuel Republican criticism that Democrats were willing to overlook Platner’s record as long as they believed he could help defeat Collins and capture a closely watched Senate seat.

Now, Maine Democrats must quickly select a replacement while attempting to distance the party from the man who won more than 156,000 Democratic primary votes.
Republicans, meanwhile, will argue that Platner’s implosion exposed both the radicalism of the Democratic base and the poor judgment of party leaders who supported him until the controversy became impossible to ignore.
