Police Raid Home of Ilhan Omar's Son, Recover Guns and Ammunition: Report

Minneapolis police reportedly executed a search warrant at an apartment where the son of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar lives, recovering firearms and ammunition during an investigation that led to the arrest of another resident.

Law enforcement sources told Alpha News reporter Liz Collin that officers searched the Minneapolis apartment Tuesday night.

“Multiple law enforcement sources say a search warrant was conducted Tuesday night on the apartment where Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s son lives in Minneapolis,” Collin reported. “Guns and ammunition were recovered from the scene.”

Omar’s son was not arrested, and police have not accused him of possessing the weapons or committing any crime.

The man taken into custody was identified as 22-year-old Abdulrahman Tulle Abdi, reportedly a roommate of Omar’s son.

Abdi was booked into the Hennepin County Jail at approximately 11:23 a.m. Tuesday on a weapons charge under Minnesota statute 609.66. Jail records reportedly show that he was released Wednesday night.

An arrest and booking do not establish guilt, and the case remains under investigation.

Traffic Stop Led Police to Apartment

According to information provided by the Minneapolis Police Department, the investigation began with a traffic stop in the 200 block of 11th Street South.

Officers stopped a vehicle and cited the driver for driving after cancellation and failing to provide proof of insurance.

The driver was initially released at the scene.

Police then began impounding the vehicle. During that process, officers discovered a firearm inside, according to the department’s account.

Investigators subsequently tracked Abdi to an apartment on Marquette Avenue.

Officers arrested him there “without incident.”

Multiple reports said police then executed a search warrant at the apartment and recovered additional firearms and ammunition. Authorities have not publicly disclosed how many weapons were found, what types of firearms were recovered or who legally owned them.

The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed that the individual arrested was not Omar’s son.

The department has not publicly identified the congresswoman’s son as a suspect, announced any charges against him or said that he exercised control over the recovered weapons.

Those distinctions are significant because initial social media posts describing the operation as a “raid” on Omar’s son’s home could create the unsupported impression that he was the target of the criminal investigation.

Based on the information released so far, Abdi is the only person known to have been arrested.

Arrested Man Reportedly Has Prior Record

Court records cited by the Daily Mail reportedly show that Abdi has accumulated 10 previous convictions since 2022, most involving traffic-related misdemeanors.

The reported record includes convictions for driving after revocation, speeding, operating without required registration or insurance, using a cellphone while driving and falsely reporting a crime.

Reports also identified a felony fleeing or eluding conviction.

Those prior cases are separate from the current weapons investigation and do not prove the new allegation.

The precise charge Abdi could face from Tuesday’s incident also remains unclear. Minnesota statute 609.66 covers several weapons-related offenses, and authorities had not released a criminal complaint detailing the prosecution’s theory as of Thursday.

Police said the investigation remains active.

No Allegation Against Omar or Her Son

Omar has not been accused of any involvement in the incident.

There is also no public evidence establishing that her son purchased, possessed or knew about the firearms reportedly recovered from the apartment.

The congresswoman had not issued a public statement about the search as of the latest reports.

Omar has represented Minnesota’s heavily Democratic 5th Congressional District since 2019 and has supported additional federal gun restrictions.

She has backed an assault-weapons ban and red-flag laws while arguing that the number of firearms in the United States has not made the country safer.

“There are more guns than people in this country,” Omar wrote in 2022, before calling for Americans to reconsider their relationship with firearms and the meaning of the Second Amendment’s “well-regulated” language.

The discovery of weapons at an apartment where her son reportedly lives will therefore draw considerable political attention.

But the facts currently available do not support attributing the weapons to Omar’s son merely because he reportedly shares the residence.

The legitimate unanswered questions concern who owned the guns, whether any were unlawfully possessed, why the warrant covered the apartment and whether prosecutors will file formal charges against Abdi.

Until police or prosecutors release additional evidence, the case remains a weapons investigation involving Abdi, not an established criminal case against Omar’s son.

What is confirmed is that police found a firearm while impounding a vehicle, arrested Abdi at the Marquette Avenue address and booked him on a weapons allegation.

What remains based on law-enforcement sources is that a subsequent search of the shared apartment produced additional guns and ammunition.

The Minneapolis Police Department said the investigation is continuing, leaving open the possibility of additional charges or disclosures.
