Report Details 2019 Incident Involving Ohio Dem Candidate
A previously reported 2019 police incident involving Amy Acton is drawing fresh scrutiny as her campaign for Ohio governor gains traction—raising renewed questions about transparency and judgment for a candidate now seeking higher office.
At the time of the incident, Acton was serving as director of the Ohio Department of Health under Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, according to Breitbart News.
Police Report Details Heated Incident
According to the police report, officers were dispatched to Acton’s residence in August 2019 at approximately 9:45 p.m. following a domestic disturbance call.
The report states that Acton, during an apparent disagreement with her husband, pulled a mirror from a wall, causing it to shatter. Officers further documented that she told them she had been drinking and had taken an unspecified amount of prescription medication.
The report also indicates that Acton considered leaving the residence by car but ultimately did not do so after being persuaded otherwise.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and advised Acton to seek further evaluation at a hospital. According to the report, she declined that recommendation.
Campaign Pushes Back on Key Claims
Acton’s campaign has strongly contested several elements of the police account, offering a significantly different version of events.
In a statement, campaign officials said Acton and her husband had returned home from dinner—where she reportedly had only one drink—before engaging in a verbal disagreement related to her demanding work schedule.
According to the campaign, Acton “bumped into a wall hanging which fell,” contradicting the report’s assertion that she intentionally pulled down a mirror. They further stated that she went to bed afterward and was asleep when officers arrived, disputing claims that she was intoxicated.
While the campaign acknowledged the disagreement, it argued that the situation has been mischaracterized and amplified for political purposes.
DeWine’s Office Responds
A spokesperson for Gov. DeWine said the governor was unaware of the incident at the time it occurred and expressed disappointment that it had not been disclosed.
“The Governor holds his staff to the highest standards of conduct,” the spokesperson said.
Hey Ohio!@amyactonoh shut down your business, your church, and your child’s school. That same year, a police report says she was mixing alcohol and prescription drugs and smashing things at home.

Of note, Gov. Mike DeWine, who has consistently praised Acton but endorsed Vivek Ramaswamy, did not learn about this incident until contacted by NBC News. Through a spox, he said the incident was "deeply troubling" and that Acton should've disclosed it. https://t.co/7vvgutT1qN pic.twitter.com/CFooNs0GCw

“Given that the allegations in the report are deeply troubling, Governor DeWine would have expected Dr. Acton to have promptly disclosed this to him, and he is very disappointed that it did not occur,” the statement added.
Renewed Scrutiny in Heated Race
The resurfacing of the report comes as Acton competes in a closely watched Democratic primary, where candidates are facing increasing examination of their past conduct and public records.
No charges were filed in connection with the 2019 incident, but the conflicting narratives—between what police documented and what the campaign now claims—are likely to remain a point of contention as the race unfolds.
As voters weigh their options, the episode underscores a broader issue that continues to resonate in American politics: whether candidates are fully forthcoming about past incidents that may reflect on their leadership, judgment, and fitness for office.
