Savannah Guthrie Abruptly Leaves ‘Today’ Show
Savannah Guthrie unexpectedly walked off the set of NBC’s Today during Wednesday’s live broadcast, prompting concern and speculation among viewers as co-host Craig Melvin briefly addressed her sudden absence on air.
Roughly 90 minutes into the program, Guthrie abruptly left the anchor desk without explanation during the live show.
“Savannah had to leave a little early. She’ll be right back tomorrow, though,” Melvin told viewers during the broadcast.
The unexpected moment immediately drew attention online, especially given the deeply personal crisis Guthrie has been navigating in recent months following the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, from her Arizona home earlier this year.
In a previous emotional interview with former Today co-anchor Hoda Kotb, Guthrie described the devastating impact the case has had on her family.
“We are in agony. It is unbearable,” Savannah said while discussing the disappearance alongside her siblings, Camron and Annie Guthrie. She called her mother “our shining light” and “our matriarch.”
The case surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has continued generating national attention as investigators pursue leads and analyze evidence.
Last month, rumors circulated online claiming authorities had detained a new person of interest connected to the investigation. However, Chris Nanos quickly denied the reports.
According to journalist Michael Ruiz, Nanos responded with a blunt one-word answer when asked whether anyone had been detained.
“Nope,” the sheriff said, shutting down speculation surrounding the alleged development.
Ruiz later summarized the sheriff’s response on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Sheriff Nanos’ one-word reply when asked about new reports that another person of interest has been detained in the Nancy Guthrie case: ‘Nope,’” Ruiz wrote.
Before those claims were publicly disputed, true crime commentator Nancy Grace had discussed the rumors during an episode of her YouTube program, Crime Stories with Nancy Grace.
“Bombshell. To Tucson and the Nancy Guthrie disappearance. Has a guy been detained overnight for questioning?” Grace asked at the beginning of the segment.
During the discussion, guest David Mack repeatedly emphasized that no information had been confirmed, even while discussing reports involving a “possible suspect” and “possible new information.”
One of the central claims circulating online suggested an individual had allegedly been detained near the same southern Arizona region where a prior suspect had reportedly been arrested earlier in the investigation.

Meanwhile, investigators continue processing forensic evidence connected to the case.
According to sources cited by Fox News, the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently received DNA evidence recovered from Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson-area residence, including a hair sample that is undergoing additional forensic analysis.
Investigative genetic genealogist CeCe Moore explained that hair evidence can often provide cleaner DNA results after contamination is removed.
“Not after it is cleaned for contamination,” Moore said. “They have that process in good shape, but it can take some time.”
She also noted, “I would assume it would be Nancy plus two or more unknowns.”
The Pima County Sheriff's Department confirmed that investigators have continued sharing evidence and findings with FBI laboratories and other forensic partners across the country.
“PCSD has worked with the FBI since the beginning of the Guthrie investigation. This is not new information,” the department stated on X. “The private lab we utilize in Florida continues to share information with the FBI lab & other partner labs across the country. DNA analysis remains ongoing.”
Earlier in the investigation, law enforcement officials also submitted DNA evidence through the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System database, though no matches were identified.
As speculation surrounding the disappearance continues, Guthrie’s sudden departure from Wednesday’s broadcast only intensified public concern over the emotional toll the case may be taking on the longtime television host and her family.
