Schumer, Dems Split On Whether To Support, Oppose Israeli Strikes On Iran
As war clouds gather in the Middle East, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is standing firmly with America’s top ally in the region, declaring the U.S. commitment to Israel’s defense must remain “ironclad” following Israel’s bold strike against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure Thursday night.
“I have long said that Israel has a right to defend itself and that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” Schumer said Friday. “Ensuring they never obtain one must remain a top national security priority.”
The Israeli assault reportedly hit Iran’s nuclear facilities, top military officials, and senior scientists as part of an aggressive move to cripple the regime’s nuclear ambitions. Israeli officials confirmed the campaign is still ongoing.

View PlansSchumer—Congress’ highest-ranking Jewish lawmaker—urged for diplomacy, but not at the cost of Israel’s security. “The preferred path… has always been a strong, unrelenting diplomatic effort backed by meaningful leverage,” he said. “And every effort must be made to move toward the path of a diplomatic solution.”
But that stance has triggered a fresh internal rift among Democrats, as anti-Israel radicals within the party ratcheted up their rhetoric, attacking Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with language many have condemned as openly anti-Semitic.
Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, lashed out at Israel, calling the self-defense strike “a reckless escalation that risks igniting regional violence.” Far-left Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who has a long history of hostility toward the Jewish state, went even further.
“The Israeli government bombing Iran is a dangerous escalation that could lead to regional war,” Tlaib posted on X. “War Criminal Netanyahu will do anything to maintain his grip on power. We cannot let him drag our country into a war with Iran. Our government must stop funding and supporting this rogue genocidal regime.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), another frequent critic of Israel, doubled down.
“Regardless of what Trump thinks, Israel knows America will do whatever they want and feels confident about their ability to get into war and have the American government back them up,” Omar wrote. She warned that Americans should “prepare themselves to either see their tax dollars being spent on weapon supplies to Israel or be dragged into war with Iran if this escalates.”
The comments sparked outrage, with many pointing out that both Omar and Tlaib have repeatedly used inflammatory, anti-Semitic tropes while demanding the U.S. abandon its most vital strategic partner in the region.
Meanwhile, more moderate Democrats like Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) backed Schumer’s position.
“Israel acted in self-defense against an attack from Iran,” Rosen said Friday. “The U.S. must continue to stand with Israel, as it has for decades, at this dangerous moment.”
The Biden administration—despite facing fierce internal division—is quietly supporting Israel’s efforts. According to U.S. defense officials, American Patriot and THAAD missile defense systems helped intercept incoming Iranian ballistic missiles. A U.S. Navy destroyer in the eastern Mediterranean also shot down rockets aimed at Israel.

View PlansThe Pentagon is reinforcing its presence in the region. The USS Thomas Hudner, a destroyer equipped for ballistic missile defense, has been redeployed eastward. A second destroyer is also being repositioned in anticipation of further action. American fighter jets are now patrolling the skies in the Middle East to protect U.S. personnel and facilities, with regional air bases on heightened alert.
With Iran openly retaliating and Democrats bitterly divided over whether to support or sabotage the U.S.-Israel alliance, President Donald J. Trump has remained steadfast: Israel has every right to eliminate existential threats—and America should stand with her, not cave to the unhinged demands of far-left radicals.
