Schumer’s “No Kings” Gamble Backfires as President Trump Axes His $16 Billion Tunnel Dream
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer thought a government shutdown would make President Donald Trump look like the villain. Instead, it’s Schumer who’s watching his prized $16 billion New York infrastructure dream collapse under the weight of his own political arrogance.
Schumer’s words and actions left no doubt — he believed the shutdown could serve as a political weapon against the White House. But after Democrats spent the weekend holding childish “No Kings” rallies against President Trump, the New York senator learned a harsh truth: never strike a king unless you can finish the job.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, President Trump announced that he had officially terminated federal funding for Schumer’s beloved Hudson River tunnel project, known as the Gateway Program.
“As of now, it’s terminated,” the president said in a clip posted to X. “And that’s up to me, and as of now, it’s terminated.”
President Trump made it clear that Democrats’ reckless shutdown stunt was directly responsible for the project’s cancellation.
“And it’s terminated because the Democrats are so foolish what they’ve done to the country,” he added. “I mean, we have the hottest country in the world. There’s no country even close. And they just want to do this [shutdown].”
He didn’t stop there — Trump emphasized that Schumer and his allies were acting purely out of political spite, ignoring the good of the American people.
“You know, there’s nothing for them to do,” the president said. “All they have to do is just say, ‘Let everything continue.’ And I will say, a lot of Democrats want this to get over.”
When pressed about the project’s funding, Trump reaffirmed his authority:
“Right now there is no funding,” the president said, “because it’s up to me.”

According to Politico, the president also terminated funding for both the $16 billion Gateway tunnel and a $7 billion Second Avenue Subway extension. Predictably, anonymous bureaucrats at the Department of Transportation rushed to claim otherwise — but President Trump’s public declaration sent a clear message: he’s the one calling the shots.
This is Trump’s leadership at its finest — decisive, unapologetic, and laser-focused on making Democrats own the pain they caused. Schumer and his allies orchestrated the shutdown hoping to score political points. Instead, they’ve found themselves crushed under the weight of a president who refuses to play by their rules.
And why should he hold back? Democrats even voted against paying U.S. military service members during the shutdown — a move that perfectly illustrates their disdain for the very people who defend their freedoms.
The modern Democratic Party has become a political movement fueled by resentment, moral decay, and hatred for America’s founding values. From mocking grieving families to glorifying lawlessness, they have proven themselves unfit to govern.
President Trump understands that this is no longer a debate about policy — it’s a battle for the soul of the nation. His message to Schumer and the Democrats is simple: if you want to play political games, be prepared to lose what you care about most.
