Sheriff Reveals Terms They Agreed To With Charlie Kirk Suspect

New details have emerged about how Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, was brought into custody — and why investigators are now examining whether he had help.

A Voluntary Surrender Negotiated

Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby revealed that Robinson’s arrest came after a call from a former police officer friend, who told him the family of the suspected shooter wanted to arrange a peaceful surrender.

“He was fearful of a SWAT team hit on his house, or he was fearful of being shot by law enforcement,” Brooksby said. “So part of the negotiation in getting him to bring himself in was that we would treat it as delicate and as soft as possible to make him feel comfortable to where he would show up at my office, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Robinson reportedly considered suicide, but his parents convinced him otherwise and stood by him as he turned himself in. Brooksby confirmed the call from his friend came at 8:02 p.m. Thursday: “He said, ‘Hey, I know who Charlie Kirk’s shooter is. I know the family through religious association, and he’s in Washington County now. And we’re working to get him to come in voluntarily.’”

The FBI’s Expanding Probe

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the Bureau is “pursuing every lead” and investigating whether Robinson acted with accomplices. Patel told senators the FBI is digging into a wide range of evidence, including:

  • The location and angle of the fatal shot.
  • Possible accomplices or spotters present at Utah Valley University.
  • A text message confession Robinson sent prior to the shooting.
  • Discord chats tied to the suspect.
  • Suspicious hand gestures observed near Kirk before the attack.
  • Visitors to Robinson’s home in the days leading up to September 10.

“We will not rest until justice is served, and our investigation into this assassination will continue until every question is answered,” Patel said.

The Discord Confession

Just two hours before he turned himself in, Robinson reportedly confessed in a private Discord group. One message read: “Hey guys, I have bad news for you all … It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this.”

Patel confirmed investigators are scrutinizing “anyone and everyone” who interacted with Robinson online. “There are a number of individuals that are currently being investigated and interrogated, and a number yet to be investigated and interrogated, specific to that chat room,” he told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Facing Capital Charges

Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder and related crimes. Prosecutors announced last week they will pursue the death penalty. His next court date is set for September 29.

Kirk, a 31-year-old conservative leader, husband, and father of two, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University — an assassination that has shaken the conservative movement and raised urgent questions about left-wing radicalization in America.
