Texas Investigators Probe Mysterious Death of GOP Staffer
A tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, has left investigators searching for answers after the sudden and unexplained death of a congressional staffer for Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX).
Regina Santos-Aviles, 35, collapsed at her home on September 13 and was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead early the next morning, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. Officials have yet to release a cause or manner of death.
The Uvalde Police Department confirmed that its officers, along with the Texas Rangers, are leading the investigation. Police Chief Homer Delgado said no evidence of foul play has been found.
“We are working closely with the victim’s family, who are fully cooperating with our investigators during this difficult time,” Delgado stated. “At this point, there is no indication of foul play. As is our standard procedure, all unattended deaths are investigated.”
Delgado emphasized that his department’s priority is protecting the family’s dignity and supporting the community.
Family members told The Daily Mail that Santos-Aviles allegedly caught fire inside her home shortly before she collapsed. Her mother, Nora Ann Gonzales, said her daughter’s final words were, “I don’t want to die.”
Uvalde Fire Chief Mario Rangel told the San Antonio Express-News that responders discovered signs of a small fire. “When we arrived, we learned of a fire behind the residence that had been put out with a fire extinguisher,” Rangel said. Authorities have not confirmed what may have started the blaze.
Santos-Aviles leaves behind an 8-year-old son. She was remembered as a devoted mother, community leader, and faithful servant to her district. Before joining Rep. Gonzales’s office in 2021, she worked at the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce. In her role as district director, she focused on constituent services and community outreach.

Rep. Gonzales honored her memory with Scripture:
“‘Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.’ 2 Thessalonians 3:16.”
He added in a statement: “We are all heart-stricken by the recent news. Regina devoted her profession toward making a difference in her community. She will always be remembered for her passion towards Uvalde and helping the community become a better place.”

The Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation, though no timeline has been given for the medical examiner’s findings, which could take weeks due to pending toxicology tests.
Authorities have urged patience as rumors swirl, stressing that the official investigation remains ongoing.
Santos-Aviles’s sudden death has dealt another heavy blow to the Uvalde community, still mourning the devastating 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting. Friends described her as a selfless woman whose heart was devoted to her son and her hometown.
“She was always working for others,” one family friend said. “Her heart was with her son and with her hometown.”
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
