Top Trump Official Resigns Abruptly Amid Speculation Tied to 'Signalgate'

A key figure in President Donald Trump’s inner circle unexpectedly stepped down Thursday morning, triggering widespread speculation online about a possible connection to the emerging “Signalgate” controversy.

Multiple outlets report that Michael Waltz, a former congressman currently serving as Trump’s national security advisor, is preparing to resign along with his deputy. The news spread quickly, gaining traction on cable networks by midday.

CBS cited journalist Mark Halperin, who reported that both Waltz and Alex Wong were expected to leave their positions before the day’s end.

Waltz came under scrutiny after mistakenly allowing Jeffrey Goldberg, a well-known left-leaning editor at The Atlantic, access to a secure group chat. The private Signal conversation reportedly involved several of the administration’s top intelligence officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. They were allegedly discussing an imminent military strike on Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

Following Goldberg’s publication of excerpts from the conversation, the administration entered damage-control mode for several weeks. Waltz later admitted responsibility for the breach, explaining that his iPhone had inadvertently saved Goldberg’s number to a contact card meant for a staff member he was trying to reach.

Wong, meanwhile, held the role of deputy assistant secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the State Department and previously served as deputy special representative for North Korea during Trump’s first term. He was recognized by Trump for playing a significant role in organizing the historic summit between the president and North Korean leadership.
