Trump Announces Historic Prescription Drug Price Cuts Ahead Of Midterms
President Donald J. Trump on Friday announced sweeping reductions in prescription drug prices, hailing the breakthrough as a “shock to the system” that will deliver relief to millions of Americans — and play a decisive role in the upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking from the Oval Office alongside top health officials and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, Trump unveiled an agreement that allows state Medicaid programs to purchase medications at most-favored-nation (MFN) prices — the lowest costs available among developed nations.
According to a White House fact sheet, the cuts are substantial:
- Eucrisa (dermatitis treatment): 80% reduction
- Xeljanz (rheumatoid arthritis): 40% reduction
- Zavzpret (migraines): 50% reduction
And Trump hinted this is only the beginning.
“We’re going to have another meeting next week on this,” Trump told reporters. “We have another great company coming in, similar kind of numbers, but we’re going to show you some 1,000 percent drops in prices. There has never been anything like this in the history of medicine.”

The president stressed that his push to lower drug prices began in his first term but was temporarily interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He credited Bourla and other pharmaceutical leaders for helping accelerate therapeutic breakthroughs during that crisis, and said the same determination is now being directed toward affordability.
“This is a very big deal. This is a big shock to the system,” Trump said. “Americans are not going to be ripped off anymore. Those days are over.”
The MFN policy — which ties U.S. prices to the lowest available abroad — is designed to end what Trump has long described as “global freeloading,” where American patients subsidize inflated costs while other countries pay far less.

Health officials praised the deal as historic. While some industry analysts warn that aggressive price controls could discourage innovation, Trump rejected that argument.
“Companies are going to continue to make plenty of money,” he said. “But Americans are going to be treated fairly.”
With the midterms looming, Trump made clear the political stakes: voters will soon feel the difference in their wallets.
“This is not just policy,” he said. “This is people’s lives. This is fairness. And it’s happening right now.”
