Trump Could Secure a Third Term in the White House – Democrats Outraged

There is a potential scenario in which former President Donald Trump could serve a third term in the White House—if a proposed amendment by a Republican congressman were to become law.

To guarantee that the United States “can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs,” Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, has introduced a constitutional amendment that would open the door for Trump to pursue a third term.

Under this amendment, a president who has already served two terms would be allowed to seek a third, provided the two previous terms were not consecutive. Historically, only President Grover Cleveland has served non-consecutive terms, a feat that Trump matched with his return to office following his victory in November.

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” states the amendment put forward by Ogles.

In U.S. history, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the only president to have served more than two terms. He passed away during his fourth term, an exception to the informal two-term precedent followed by previous presidents. The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, officially limited presidents to two terms.

“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles stated on Thursday. “He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.”

Democrats and major media outlets have reacted strongly whenever Trump jokes about extending his time in office. On Truth Social, Trump posted an image featuring campaign signs such as “Trump 2024, Trump 2028, Trump 2032,” which humorously expanded into the distant future.

Most recently, Trump joked about the idea during a meeting with Republican leaders after his reelection. “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something,” he remarked a week after securing his 2024 victory. “Unless you say, ‘He’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”

Republican officials have stressed that Trump has no real intentions of seeking a third term, clarifying that his comments were made in jest. “That was a joke. It was clearly a joke,” stated U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (R-OK). “I leaned over to somebody beside me, [Rep.] Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and I said, that’ll be the headlines tomorrow, ‘Trump trying to thwart the Constitution,’ which—there’s nothing further from the truth.”

Trump himself has previously dismissed the idea of serving beyond two terms.

“I wouldn’t be in favor of a challenge. Not for me. I wouldn’t be in favor of it at all. I intend to serve four years and do a great job. And I want to bring our country back. I want to put it back on the right track,” Trump told Time magazine last year.
