Trump Predicts Leading Female Democrat Will Run For President In 2028
President Donald Trump believes Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is positioning herself for a 2028 presidential campaign as she and other progressive Democrats attempt to distance themselves from the policies they once enthusiastically promoted.
Trump made the prediction Friday during a visit to Long Island, days after the New York Democrat acknowledged that the wave of progressive activism that dominated Democratic politics in 2019 and 2020 had become “crazy.”
Asked directly whether he believed Ocasio-Cortez was preparing to seek the White House, Trump responded, “I think so.”
Trump Says Democrats Are Rebranding
Trump argued that Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats recognize that their former positions on crime, illegal immigration and sanctuary jurisdictions have become politically damaging.
“If you really look at it, they’re all saying the same thing,” Trump said.
“They’re all trying to disavow themselves from saying about crime and all, we love sanctuary cities. All of the things that they said they’re now trying to disavow,” he added.
The president predicted that growing public opposition would eventually force Democratic officials to abandon sanctuary-city policies, which restrict cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration officers.
“I think you’re going to see sanctuary cities start to end, because sanctuary cities are a disaster,” Trump said. “And somebody like her, she was big for sanctuary cities.”
Trump has long argued that sanctuary policies and soft-on-crime measures such as cashless bail endanger American communities by preventing authorities from detaining and removing dangerous criminal illegal aliens.
AOC Still Defends Sanctuary Cities
Despite appearing to moderate her language around some elements of the progressive movement, Ocasio-Cortez has continued defending sanctuary-city policies.
During a congressional hearing last year, she characterized those measures as a necessary check against what she considered federal overreach in immigration enforcement.
Her record could make it difficult to execute a convincing political rebrand ahead of a national campaign.
Ocasio-Cortez rose to prominence as one of the Democratic Party’s most aggressive advocates for democratic socialism, expansive federal spending and restrictions on immigration enforcement. She has also supported progressive challengers who defeated establishment Democrats and sitting incumbents in party primaries.
Trump’s remarks suggest Republicans will ensure that any attempt by Ocasio-Cortez to move toward the political center is measured against the positions she embraced while building her national profile.
Congresswoman Refuses to Rule Out 2028
Ocasio-Cortez has not formally announced a presidential campaign or said that she has made a decision about 2028.
She nevertheless continues to avoid ruling out a run.
“I think my main focus is really genuinely just the midterms right now, and we have to make sure that we win this majority,” she recently told The Independent.
When Fox News Digital asked whether she wanted to pursue the Democratic nomination, Ocasio-Cortez again declined to give a direct answer.
“I have genuinely not really weighed seriously anything past the midterm elections,” she said.
“I think that I’m taking in this information just like anybody else,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
Her repeated insistence that she is focused only on the midterms leaves the door open to begin a campaign once the November elections are over.
AOC Leads Early New Hampshire Poll
Ocasio-Cortez’s potential candidacy is no longer merely a matter of media speculation.
A University of New Hampshire poll placed her at the top of the early Democratic field among likely primary voters in the state.
She received 22 percent support, narrowly defeating former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who received 21 percent.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris trailed badly with only 5 percent—17 points behind Ocasio-Cortez.
Although polling years before an election is highly preliminary, the results demonstrate Ocasio-Cortez’s strength among the Democratic activist base and the weakness of the party’s former national leadership.
Political prediction markets have also shown increasing interest in her chances of becoming the Democratic nominee.
White House or Schumer’s Senate Seat?
Ocasio-Cortez could have another major opportunity in 2028.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is scheduled to face voters that year, and speculation has persisted that she could challenge the longtime New York senator from the left.
A Senate campaign would allow her to capitalize on progressive dissatisfaction with the Democratic establishment while avoiding the risks of immediately pursuing the presidency.
A White House bid, however, would give Ocasio-Cortez a national platform and place democratic socialism at the center of the Democratic primary.
Her support for insurgent left-wing candidates suggests that she sees the party’s future as belonging to its progressive wing rather than aging establishment leaders such as Schumer.
‘Woke 1’ Admission Signals Political Shift
Ocasio-Cortez recently told ABC’s “This Week” that the progressive activism of 2019 and 2020—sometimes described as “Woke 1”—had become “crazy.”
That acknowledgment represents a striking shift for a politician who became one of the defining figures of that political era.
The challenge for Ocasio-Cortez is that voters may distinguish between changing rhetoric and changing policies.
She can criticize the excesses of “woke” activism, but her support for sanctuary jurisdictions, socialist candidates and other far-left priorities remains part of her record.
Trump appears convinced that the new tone is no accident. In his view, Ocasio-Cortez is attempting to make herself more acceptable to a national electorate before entering the 2028 race.
No Democrat has officially launched a presidential campaign, and the field could change substantially over the next two years. But with Ocasio-Cortez leading early New Hampshire polling and refusing to close the door, Trump may have identified the party’s emerging front-runner.
