Trump Says Somalia’s President Said They Didn’t Want Ilhan Omar Back
President Donald Trump delivered a stinging one-liner Thursday at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), saying he told Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to “take back” the far-left congresswoman after she launched vicious attacks against conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his assassination.
“I met the head of Somalia, did you know that?” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “And I suggested that maybe he’d like to take her back. And he said, ‘I don’t want her.’”
The jab—prompted by Omar’s string of hateful remarks about the late Turning Point USA founder—drew laughter and applause from Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and other senior officials present, according to the New York Post.
Omar had mocked tributes to Kirk just one day after his fatal shooting during an outdoor event in Utah on Sept. 10. Speaking to the progressive outlet Zeteo, she dismissed tributes to the slain conservative leader: “There are a lot of people who are talking about him just wanting to have a civil debate. These people are full of s— and it’s important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness.”
She doubled down in a video posted on X, calling Kirk a “reprehensible human being” and a “stochastic terrorist.” Omar later repeated her disdain on CNN, insisting: “I’m not going to sit here and be judged for not wanting to honor any legacy this man has left behind, that should be in the dustbin of history.”
The backlash was swift. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution to censure Omar, accusing her of “celebrating murder.” The measure narrowly failed 214–213 after four Republicans—Reps. Mike Flood (NE), Tom McClintock (CA), Jeff Hurd (CO), and Cory Mills (FL)—broke ranks and sided with Democrats to block it.
Mace blasted Omar in a statement to Explain America: “If you’re Somalia first, you’re not America first, and a one-way ticket to Somalia is the nicest thing we could do.” She reiterated the same point on X: “If you celebrate murder, maybe Somalia can take you back.”
Mace also told Fox News Digital that Omar mocked the assassination of Kirk, a husband and father of two. “Now she’s lashing out because we called her out. What’s not ‘well’ is celebrating political violence,” Mace said. “What’s not ‘smart’ is defending it. Omar should be ashamed of herself. Omar can throw insults all day, but it won’t save her from accountability. She crossed the line, and we’re not letting her get away with it. Go back to Somalia.”
Omar’s comments even drew the ire of professional golfer Phil Mickelson, who blasted the congresswoman on X. “Ilhan spews hate every time she opens her mouth, she came here fraudulently and will hopefully be sent back to Somalia soon,” Mickelson wrote in response to a video of Omar calling Kirk “Dr. Frankenstein” and saying “he was killed by his monster.”
Meanwhile, Tyler Robinson, 22, a Utah Valley University student with leftist leanings and a transgender partner, has been charged with aggravated murder in the killing of Charlie Kirk.
Omar’s attacks on a slain father, coupled with her open contempt for conservatives, have further cemented her reputation as one of the most radical and divisive figures in Congress.
