Trump Slams Canada Minutes Before Meeting With Prime Minister
Just ahead of his first face-to-face with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House, President Donald Trump launched a blunt criticism of his northern counterpart on Truth Social.
“I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?” Trump posted.
“They, on the other hand, need EVERYTHING from us!” he added. “The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly and that will be, most likely, my only question of consequence.”
Trump, who has previously floated the idea—semi-seriously—of making Canada the 51st U.S. state, insists his comments aren’t satire. Carney and Canadian officials have dismissed such talk out of hand.
The two leaders are slated to focus on trade in their Tuesday discussion.
The Trump administration recently slapped a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, citing insufficient Canadian efforts to prevent fentanyl trafficking across the border—even though most such drugs enter the U.S. from the south. However, products compliant with USMCA rules are exempt from the new duties.

While flying aboard Air Force One, President Trump confronted reporters he accused of trying to minimize his early achievements in office.
“I think we have the greatest 100 days in the history of our country for that administration,” Trump declared. “We’re planning to do more. Uh, we’ve gotten rid of woke. We’re strengthening up our military.”
He continued, “Six months ago, we had the worst, uh, numbers in the history of our military for joining up — joining our military. Now we have the best numbers we’ve ever had. Just think of that.”
Trump pointed to falling prices across the board—except, he joked, for baby carriers—as proof his policies were working. “Energy’s down. Gas is down. Nobody’s ever seen anything — far ahead of schedule. The Democrats were destroying our country.”
He also cited lower grocery and mortgage costs, despite friction with the Federal Reserve. “Interest rates are even down,” Trump said, before offering a slight verbal slip: “You know, we have a very stubborn Fed, but Mitch — I mean, Fitch and [Inaudible], uh, that’s, that’s okay.”
On polling, Trump dismissed negative numbers as skewed. “We have a lot of fake polls when they interview Democrats, not Republicans,” he said, crediting pollster John McLaughlin with confirming the trend. “He’s never seen polls that were so fake before.”
“The media is corrupt and they’re dishonest, and they’re so bad for our country,” Trump concluded before ending the briefing. “Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you.”
In a separate appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, President Trump touched on the 2028 election and floated two names as potential successors: Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Pressed on whether he had a favorite, Trump declined to choose sides but offered praise: “I do have a vice president … and JD’s doing a fantastic job,” he said. “Marco is great. There’s a lot of them that are great. We have a lot of good people in this party.”
Asked about a possible third term, Trump shut down speculation. “It’s far too early to say that… This is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican.”
