Trump Terminates TPS for Somalis in Minnesota Amid Explosive Fraud Scandal

The current President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has ordered an immediate end to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals living in Minnesota, marking the most sweeping immigration rollback since the program’s creation in 1991 under former President George H. W. Bush.

The decisive move was announced late Friday night in a Truth Social post in which President Trump cited rampant criminality, welfare abuse, and international money laundering centered in Minnesota.

“Minnesota, under Governor Waltz, is a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity. I am, as President of the United States, hereby terminating, effective immediately, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS Program) for Somalis in Minnesota. Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER!” Trump wrote.

Fraud Explosion Under Walz Administration

Trump’s order follows a blistering investigative report by City Journal alleging that Minnesota — home to the largest Somali population in the United States — has become a global epicenter for criminal fraud and illegal government payouts under Democrat Governor Tim Walz. The report asserts that vast sums stolen from Minnesota taxpayers are being funneled to a terrorist network overseas:

“Minnesota is drowning in fraud. Billions in taxpayer dollars have been stolen during the administration of Governor Tim Walz alone. Democratic state officials, overseeing one of the most generous welfare regimes in the country, are asleep at the switch. And the media, duty-bound by progressive pieties, refuse to connect the dots.”

The investigative report further states:

“In many cases, the fraud has allegedly been perpetrated by members of Minnesota’s sizeable Somali community. Federal counterterrorism sources confirm that millions of dollars in stolen funds have been sent back to Somalia, where they ultimately landed in the hands of the terror group Al-Shabaab. As one confidential source put it: ‘The largest funder of Al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer.’”

Housing and Medicaid Fraud Under Renewed Scrutiny

In parallel with federal concerns about international money laundering, the Walz administration is also under scrutiny for massive abuses in the state’s publicly funded housing assistance system. Department of Human Services temporary commissioner Shireen Gandhi urged federal authorities to dismantle Minnesota’s Housing Stabilization Services program, citing “credible allegations of fraud” and “exponential growth in spending.”

The Medicaid-financed program ballooned from approximately $2.6 million per year in 2017 to a staggering $107 million in 2024, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Minnesota has also been the site of several major fraud operations, including widespread Medicaid abuse, autism program violations, and — most prominently — the Feeding Our Future scandal.

Largest COVID-Era Fraud Case in U.S. History

Federal courts recently sentenced Lakeville resident Khadar Adan to one year of probation for his role in the Feeding Our Future scheme — the largest pandemic-era fraud prosecution in the nation’s history. Adan admitted to receiving $1,000 in illicit proceeds through a fraudulent food distribution site operating out of his Minneapolis business center, JigJiga.

The investigation has already led to 75 indictments and 50 guilty pleas, including mastermind participants who collectively siphoned roughly $250 million in federal reimbursements meant to feed children during pandemic school closures. Prosecutors described how the perpetrators used taxpayer funds to acquire luxury vehicles, expensive real estate, and high-end personal goods rather than feeding children.

Among those charged was a former campaign associate of progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), further intensifying the spotlight on political networks surrounding Minnesota’s Somali-American leadership.

Following President Trump’s announcement, Omar responded publicly on X:

A Turning Point for U.S. Immigration Policy

Trump’s decision instantly marks one of the most aggressive anti-fraud immigration enforcement actions in modern history. Supporters argue that this fulfills a core promise of his America First agenda: to end programs that incentivize foreign dependency on U.S. taxpayers and to defend American citizens from crime, fraud, and national-security risks.

With TPS now terminated for Somali nationals in Minnesota, the coming weeks are expected to test whether the Walz administration and other Democratic leaders — long praised by progressives for Minnesota’s expansive social-welfare network — will finally confront the state’s spiraling corruption or continue to deflect responsibility.
