Trump Threatens China with 'Massive Consequences' if They Provide Iran Weapons

President Donald J. Trump issued a sharp warning to China on Sunday, signaling that any material support for Iran’s military could trigger severe economic retaliation—including massive tariffs on Chinese goods.

The warning comes as tensions escalate in the Middle East and the administration moves to enforce a naval blockade of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global energy supplies.

During an appearance with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures, Trump addressed reports suggesting China may have supplied Iran with advanced weapons systems.

“Yes, and other people, but yes, China too, if we find that China— because I hear news reports,” Trump said when asked directly if his warning applied to Beijing.

While expressing skepticism about the reports, Trump made clear the consequences would be swift and severe if confirmed:

“So a news report doesn’t mean much to me because they’re so fake, but I hear news reports about China giving the shoulder missiles — what’s called a shoulder missile, anti-aircraft missile. I doubt they would do that because I have a relationship and I think they wouldn’t do that, but maybe they did a little bit at the beginning, but I don’t think they would anymore, no. But if we catch them doing that, they get a 50 percent tariff, which is a staggering— that’s a staggering amount.”

The president’s remarks underscore a broader strategy of combining military deterrence with economic pressure, as the United States seeks to isolate Iran and prevent foreign powers from bolstering its capabilities.

Earlier Sunday, Trump announced that U.S. forces would enforce a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that vessels attempting to comply with Iranian toll demands—particularly those paying in Chinese yuan or cryptocurrency—would be intercepted by the U.S. Navy.

Iran had reportedly attempted to impose passage fees on ships transiting the waterway, further escalating tensions in a region already fraught with instability.

At the same time, U.S. officials have downplayed Iran’s remaining defensive capabilities. Trump described the regime’s air defenses as ineffective and emphasized ongoing efforts by American forces to neutralize maritime threats, including sea mines reportedly deployed by Iran.

Despite Tehran’s claims of control over the waterway, reports suggest even Iranian officials lack precise knowledge of mine placements—raising additional concerns about the safety of global shipping routes.

The situation has also been complicated by reports of recent military losses in the region, including aircraft incidents tied to both hostile engagements and operational errors. However, the administration continues to project confidence that Iran’s overall military posture has been significantly weakened.

As geopolitical tensions mount, Trump’s message to both adversaries and potential enablers is unmistakable: any effort to support Iran—whether directly or indirectly—will be met with overwhelming economic and military consequences.
