Trump Vows To Make D.C. ‘One Of The Safest’ U.S. Cities
President Donald J. Trump is promising a historic turnaround for the nation’s capital, declaring Washington, D.C., will soon be transformed from a violent hotbed into “one of the safest” cities in the world.
In a Saturday Truth Social post, President Trump announced that the White House will hold a press conference Monday to outline his aggressive plan to crush violent crime in the District.
“It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World,” Trump wrote. “It will soon be one of the safest!!!”

View PlansThe pledge comes just days after the administration revealed that Trump had ordered a surge of federal law enforcement into D.C., according to The Washington Times.
“Washington, DC is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens.”
The initiative—set for at least one week and potentially longer—brings together a coalition of agencies, including the U.S. Capitol Police, Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Protective Service, the DEA, Enforcement and Removal Operations, the ATF, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C.
President Trump has long blasted local officials for failing to keep the city safe and has repeatedly floated the idea of federalizing D.C.—a move that would require Congress to overturn the 1973 Home Rule Act that gave the District an elected government.
His latest push follows the brutal mugging of Edward Coristine, a Department of Government Efficiency staffer nicknamed “Big Balls.” The attack, carried out by violent teens, became another symbol of what Trump says is the collapse of law and order in the capital.
“Local ‘youths’ and gang members, some only 14, 15, and 16-years-old, are randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent Citizens, at the same time that they will almost immediately be released,” Trump said. “They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it’s going to happen now!”
Calling for a major overhaul of D.C. law, Trump demanded that teenage offenders as young as 14 be prosecuted as adults.
“The Law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these ‘minors’ as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14,” Trump declared. “The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs. If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore.”
Vice President J.D. Vance echoed the president’s stance.
“Our nation’s capital has become ridden with out-of-control violent crime thanks to misguided local leadership,” Vance posted on X. “President Trump is putting a stop to this lawlessness.”
Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order creating a special task force to flood public areas with law enforcement, targeting open-air drug use, vandalism, fare evasion, unpermitted protests, public intoxication, and assisting in the removal of illegal migrants.
Trump’s renewed call to federalize the city comes after an attempted carjacking injured another DOGE staff member.

View Plans“I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City,” Trump vowed in a recent social media post.
While Trump has made it clear he wants to “run D.C.,” federalizing the District outright would require an act of Congress—something that faces steep opposition in the Democrat-controlled Senate. However, the president could still assume control of the Metropolitan Police Department in an emergency or deploy the D.C. National Guard, which already answers directly to him.
