Trump’s Task Force Slashes D.C. Gun Permit Wait Times From Months To Days
President Donald J. Trump’s law-and-order crackdown in Washington, D.C. is already paying dividends for law-abiding residents who have long been denied their right to self-defense under the capital’s burdensome bureaucracy.
The president’s Making D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force — created by executive order in March — has cut gun registration and concealed carry wait times from several months to just days, without altering the city’s famously restrictive gun laws, Slay News reported.
“President Trump is not only stopping violent crime in Washington, D.C., he is also streamlining the permitting process for law-abiding residents who want the ability to protect themselves and their families,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said.

Before Trump’s directive, D.C. residents were forced to wait up to four months just for a firearms registration appointment. Now, residents can book next-day meetings with the Metropolitan Police Department or even walk in, with availability posted online.
The concealed carry application system has been overhauled as well. What once dragged on for months now takes an average of 4.6 days, according to May data.
To streamline the process further, the city merged registration and concealed carry categories and authorized fingerprinting through third-party vendors following City Council approval on July 28.
Despite these improvements, Washington, D.C. still enforces some of the strictest gun laws in the country — including bans on most semi-automatic rifles, strict ammunition limits, and extensive gun-free zones covering schools, hospitals, stadiums, government facilities, and alcohol-serving businesses.
Applicants must renew concealed carry permits every two years, complete mandatory firearms training, and avoid disqualifications such as refusing fingerprinting or attempting to register prohibited firearms like so-called “assault weapons.”
The task force is now considering broader carry rights — including allowing women to carry in handbags, enabling carry on public transit, and recognizing out-of-state permits — though these measures require City Council approval.
The group includes representatives from the Department of the Interior, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C.
The initiative is not limited to firearms. The U.S. military has prepared to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to D.C. as part of Trump’s broader campaign to reclaim the capital from spiraling crime and disorder.
Though the president has not yet made a final decision, officials confirm the Guard is on standby. Meanwhile, 120 FBI agents flown in from across the country have already begun patrolling D.C. streets in carjacking hotspots, despite limited local patrol training, according to the Washington Post.
“Be prepared! There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK,” Trump declared on Truth Social ahead of a White House press conference on the city’s deteriorating conditions.

View PlansThe directive stems from Trump’s March 28 executive order Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful, which paired crime reduction with an immigration crackdown.
“The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong,” Trump posted — echoing the tough-on-crime stance he first championed at the border.
