Vance Says DOJ Is Investigating Ilhan Omar Amid Growing Scrutiny

Vice President J.D. Vance said Tuesday that the Department of Justice is currently examining matters involving Rep. Ilhan Omar, a statement that immediately intensified political pressure on one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent progressive lawmakers.

Vance made the comments during a White House press briefing while stepping in for press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who is on maternity leave.

The moment came after Daily Caller correspondent Reagan Reese asked about long-running questions surrounding Omar’s immigration history, marriage timeline and previous campaign finance controversies.

Vance did not lay out specific allegations, but he made clear that the Trump administration is taking the matter seriously.

“I don’t want to prejudge an investigation,” Vance said.

“You read the things about Ilhan Omar, and about who she married, and whether she didn’t marry this person or that person,” he continued.

“It certainly seems like something fishy is there.”

“But everyone is entitled to equal justice under the laws.”

The vice president then appeared to go further, saying the Justice Department is actively reviewing the situation.

“So we’re going to investigate it, we’re going to take a look at it,” he said.

“If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime, and that’s something that the Department of Justice is looking at right now.”

The remarks represent one of the clearest public signals yet from President Donald Trump’s second administration that Omar may be facing federal scrutiny.

Neither the Justice Department nor Omar’s congressional office immediately responded to requests for comment after Vance’s statement.

Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and has long dismissed Republican criticism as politically motivated. Still, questions surrounding the Minnesota Democrat have followed her for years, including allegations tied to campaign spending, tax matters, personal relationships and immigration-related concerns.

Conservatives have frequently raised questions about Omar’s marriage history and whether any prior relationship may have intersected with immigration law. No criminal charges have been filed against Omar in connection with those allegations.

The renewed attention comes as Republicans in Minnesota continue pressing for answers surrounding the Feeding Our Future fraud scandal, one of the largest COVID-era fraud cases in American history.

Republican lawmakers have sought to examine whether Omar had any connections to individuals or organizations involved in that scandal, particularly through her support for pandemic-era food assistance expansions under the federal MEALS Act.

Earlier this month, Republicans on a Minnesota House committee attempted to subpoena Omar for documents related to the investigation. Democrats blocked the effort in a tied committee vote.

GOP lawmakers have argued that pandemic waivers, reduced oversight and rushed federal spending created the conditions for widespread abuse in child nutrition programs.

Omar’s office has declined invitations to testify before the committee.

Vance’s remarks also carried a broader message about justice and accountability.

“Everyone is entitled to equal justice under the laws,” he said.

For conservatives, that statement cuts to the heart of a larger debate over whether politically connected figures are held to the same legal standards as ordinary Americans.

The vice president’s comments are likely to become a major flashpoint as Republicans place corruption, government fraud and accountability at the center of their 2026 campaign message.

If the Justice Department is actively reviewing Omar, it would mark a significant development involving a high-profile member of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

At the same time, Vance did not identify the scope of the inquiry, name specific evidence or outline what potential charges, if any, could be under consideration.

That leaves major questions about what the DOJ may be examining.

But politically, the impact is already clear.

Republicans will likely point to Vance’s comments as evidence that long-ignored questions about Omar are finally receiving serious attention. Democrats, meanwhile, are expected to frame the matter as political targeting by the Trump administration.

Still, Vance’s statement was direct, The Daily Caller reported: “If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime.”

That line alone ensures Omar will remain under an even brighter national spotlight in the days ahead.
