Violent Chants Against Noem At NYC Following ICE Shooting Getting Out of Hand: Reports

Protests against federal immigration enforcement escalated into explicit threats Thursday as demonstrators gathered at Foley Square in New York City were caught on video chanting violent rhetoric targeting Trump administration officials, including a chant declaring, “Kristi Noem will hang.”

Video clips circulating widely on social media showed protesters holding anti-ICE signs while directing hostile chants at federal authorities during a rally opposing immigration enforcement actions under President Donald J. Trump’s second-term agenda. No arrests were reported in connection with the New York protest, and city officials did not immediately respond to questions about the chants or whether they would be reviewed by law enforcement.

The disturbing rhetoric in New York coincided with a violent encounter involving federal agents on the opposite coast. On the same day as the Foley Square protest, federal agents shot and wounded two individuals during a targeted vehicle stop in southeast Portland, Oregon, according to local and federal authorities.

Portland police said officers responded around 2:18 p.m. Thursday to reports of gunfire near Southeast 82nd Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported for medical treatment and were reported to be alive. Authorities confirmed that no local police officers fired their weapons during the incident.

Federal officials later confirmed the shooting involved agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. According to the Department of Homeland Security, two U.S. Border Patrol agents attempted a targeted vehicle stop when the driver allegedly used the vehicle as a weapon.

“When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents,” the department said in a statement posted on X. “Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene.”

Homeland Security officials identified the wounded passenger as a Venezuelan national who was unlawfully present in the United States and allegedly connected to the violent transnational criminal organization Tren de Aragua. DHS said the individual was linked to a prostitution operation run by the gang and was involved in a recent local shooting. Officials also stated that the driver was believed to be affiliated with the same criminal network.

The department did not release the names of those involved or detail the extent of their injuries. The investigation remains ongoing.

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson confirmed that the individuals were shot by federal agents during the encounter and said city officials were monitoring the situation while coordinating with federal authorities, Fox News reported.

The Portland incident unfolded amid heightened national scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement following a deadly confrontation earlier this week in Minneapolis, where an ICE agent fatally shot a woman after authorities said she accelerated her vehicle toward officers. Federal officials have maintained that the agent acted in self-defense, while left-wing critics have attempted to cast doubt on the use of force.

Taken together, the events in New York, Portland, and Minneapolis have intensified the national debate over border security, public safety, and the increasingly hostile environment faced by federal law enforcement officers tasked with enforcing immigration law.

While peaceful protest is protected under the First Amendment, legal experts have long noted that explicit threats of violence fall outside constitutional protections depending on intent and context. Despite the graphic rhetoric captured on video in New York, authorities did not indicate whether the chants would prompt further investigation.

Federal officials have repeatedly warned that immigration agents are facing growing dangers in the field, particularly as suspects increasingly use vehicles as weapons. The Department of Homeland Security has cited a rise in assaults against immigration officers in recent years—an alarming trend unfolding as the Trump administration presses forward with its law-and-order enforcement strategy.
