WATCH: Kristi Noem Shreds Democrat Congressman After He Whitewashes Deadly National Guard Terror Attack
Democrats have spent years downplaying violence when it doesn’t serve their political narrative. But even for Washington’s political class, calling the deliberate murder of a U.S. National Guardsman an “unfortunate accident” represents a new level of moral bankruptcy.
That is exactly what happened during a House hearing on global security threats, when Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi — the same lawmaker who spent years weaponizing the Jan. 6 narrative — attempted to sanitize an act of terrorism that left one American service member dead and another gravely wounded.
The exchange unfolded as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem appeared before Congress Thursday. Thompson casually dismissed the Nov. 26 attack on West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom as an accident. Beckstrom was shot in Washington, D.C., and succumbed to her injuries the following day. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe of the West Virginia Air National Guard was also shot and remains in critical condition.
Their alleged attacker, Rahmanullah Lakanwal — a 29-year-old Afghan refugee who entered the U.S. in September 2021 — has pleaded not guilty. Witnesses reported that he shouted “Allahu Akbar!” during the assault.
In a clip posted to X, Thompson referred to the shooting as “an unfortunate accident.” Noem immediately cut him off.
“You think that was an unfortunate accident?” Noem shot back. “It was a terrorist attack.”
Thompson appeared stunned, mumbling, “Look, I’ll get it straight.”
But Noem wasn’t backing down.
“He shot our National Guardsmen in the head,” she responded sharply.
Instead of acknowledging the reality of the attack, Thompson grew irritated, complaining to the committee chair: “Mr. Chairman, will you direct the witness to allow me to [ask] my question?”
The chairman remained silent. Thompson then turned and repeated his dismissive framing, calling the shootings “an unfortunate situation.”
The White House’s official Rapid Response account responded with well-deserved contempt, declaring Thompson a “scumbag.”
Scumbag @BennieGThompson says the horrific attack on our two great National Guard heroes in D.C. was just an "unfortunate accident."@Sec_Noem: "You think that was an unfortunate accident!? It was a terrorist attack. He shot our National Guardsmen in the head." pic.twitter.com/O4hEDvYDuT

Thompson, like other members of the Jan. 6 Committee, previously received a preemptive pardon from then-President Joe Biden — a striking contrast to the aggressive prosecutions of ordinary Americans caught up in the 2021 Capitol breach. Lakanwal, meanwhile, was allowed into the country following Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, a policy failure that continues to endanger Americans at home.
While Thompson played politics, Specialist Beckstrom — a 20-year-old American woman who volunteered to protect her country — lost her life. Her sacrifice stands in stark contrast to the indifference shown by Democrats who routinely ignore or excuse violence committed by foreign nationals.
Once again, the left’s priorities are laid bare: ideology first, Americans last.
