Whoops: David Hogg's First PAC-Backed Primary Candidate Goes Down in Flames

On Tuesday, Americans got their first glimpse of David Hogg’s plan to hijack the Democratic Party from within — and the verdict is in: it’s already falling apart.

The former vice chair of the Democratic National Committee and self-styled Gen Z kingmaker has thrown in with a group of unqualified online influencers under the banner of his new political outfit, Leaders We Deserve — a $20 million vanity PAC aimed at primarying veteran Democrats in deep-blue districts.

Hogg’s handpicked candidate in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District — 25-year-old TikTok-fluent “activist” Deja Foxx — went down in flames on Tuesday night, despite weeks of hype, celebrity endorsements, and a sizable online presence.

With 77 percent of the vote counted as of Wednesday morning, Adelita Grijalva, daughter of the late Rep. Raúl Grijalva, cruised to victory with 62 percent, according to the Associated Press. Foxx came in a distant second with a dismal 21 percent — a margin that even Hogg’s carefully curated Instagram memes couldn’t close.

Grijalva, who served as a Pima County Supervisor and campaigned as a continuation of her father’s decades-long local legacy, will now all but certainly win the September general election in the deep-blue district.

“This is a victory not for me, but for our community and the progressive movement my dad started in Southern Arizona more than 50 years ago,” Grijalva said in her victory statement.

Even The Washington Post — no bastion of conservative commentary — admitted the obvious: this was no grassroots uprising. “The Mamdani sequel that wasn’t,” the paper quipped, referring to New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani’s surprise victory in 2020. But unlike Mamdani, Grijalva had the backing of the very same progressive machine Foxx and Hogg thought they could outmaneuver — including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Foxx’s credentials? She once went viral as a teen for heckling former GOP Sen. Jeff Flake over abortion. Since then, she’s made a career out of social media activism and being a left-wing influencer — apparently enough to convince Hogg that she could be the vanguard of his “generational change” campaign.

“Deja Foxx has been holding Republicans’ and career politicians’ feet to the fire since she was 15 years old,” Hogg wrote in his endorsement, praising her experience “working at a gas station” and confronting “Trump’s cruel policies.”

Reality check: she got demolished by a candidate with both name recognition and a proven record in local government.

Foxx had even been bragging about internal polling showing her within “striking distance.” Turns out, she was striking distance away from political irrelevance.

And now the question must be asked: Did Foxx tank Hogg, or did Hogg tank Foxx?

After all, it wasn’t long ago that Hogg was being quietly pushed out of his role as DNC vice chair — reportedly due to conflicts of interest tied to his PAC’s radical primary plans. His association with the increasingly unhinged far-left of the party has already turned him into damaged goods. For some voters, his support may have been more of a red flag than a rallying cry.

Then again, maybe the real failure was trying to build a national political operation around a Gen Z influencer with no policy experience and no real-world qualifications. All Hogg had to do was take a look at the map: Grijalva had institutional support, community roots, and a recognizable last name. Foxx had a blue checkmark and a TikTok account.

This should be a wake-up call — not just for Hogg, but for Democrats hoping to turn their party into a playground for leftist social media personalities. America doesn’t need more Instagram influencers in Congress. It needs serious leaders, not hashtag warriors.

If this is what Hogg gave up his DNC post to pursue, maybe it’s time to ask if he deserves leadership — or if he’s just leading the next generation of Democrats off a cliff.
